Looking at adding a new hunting rifle to the collection. Gun must be wood grain stock. Sub 500 yard gun, lighter the better but do want to keep the gun accurate. Will be using factory ammunition of some sort. Any good things or bad about both guns. If you have seen either gun on sale or used for a decent price let me know!

If anyone knows any other wood grain .308 guns that fit my description let know not stuck on those brands!

I have had various lightweight tikka rifles (Including the compact, lite, stainless lite, and some sort of cabelas special)...but currently own both a tikka t3x CTR, a stainless varmint, a browning xbolt pro (gen 2), and sold my other xbp gen 2 just recently...slightly different in material and cost. Overall experiences:

Tikka:
-Smooth action
-Great accuracy
-Plastic mags are a snug fit, feed perfectly
-Extracts perfectly
-Generally good trigger, there are ways to make it lighter but you must remove the barrelled action out of the stock to do this.
-70* throw
-2 position safety (some like it, others dont..I work with what i got)

Browning
-Smooth action, can get to tikka smooth over time
-Great accuracy
-Flush fit mags, great for packing through the bush. Feeds perfectly.
-Extracts perfectly
-Decent trigger, can buy the Mcarbo trigger sping and RE/RE if you want, but there are ways to lighten the factory trigger..must remove barreld action out of the stock to do this.
-60* throw
-2 position safety, however the bolt has a button on it that allows you to remove a live round with the safety on "fire". Very handy, but again not a requirement.

The tikka rifle has a larger aftermarket support if you want to mess with things (stock, trigger, etc). But in no way did I ever feel that the browning needed anything. I think if you want to just grab a rifle and go hunting either will be totally fine from the factory...Try to go to a store and handle both and see how you like holding it, working the bolt, general carry-ability.

Tikka with a limbsaver . For factory loads I have been using Hornady Precision hunter with excellant results. Using DNR Game Reaper rings and a Vortex Viper. Do not see a reson to change my setup for a long time.

Also T3X / T3X superlite are about a pound lighter than the T3X hunter but I beleive the rest remains the same besides fluted barrel on the superlite.

I'd choose the T3x hunter over the X-Bolt. ... I'd choose a Winchester M70 Featherweight over them both.

You'll be happy with whatever you choose - happy shopping!

I like my xbolt micro hunter in 308
Adult sized wood stock with a 20" barrel iirc
I really don't see why tikka with their oversized actions are so well liked, but I like to get one to see if it can win me over too.

Agree with this.

The recent Winchester M70’s I’ve seen have been more aesthetically pleasing than Tikka and Browning equivalents. If looks didn’t matter you wouldn’t be going for wood, so might as well choose the pretty one.

To add to TT1900's comments above, with the Win 70 you also get a 3-position safety, mauser-style controlled feed & claw extractor, fixed/manual ejector, better inletting and fit/finish (than the Tikka for sure), it comes bedded (2-point) from the factory. and so on.

Go to a gun shop that has both.
Fawndle the heck out of them.
One will pick you.

I own two Tikkas and no Xbolt.
Same here!
I started of with a Savage 10FCP. It was ok, but rough to cycle and the accu trigger was goofy. I picked up a T3X Lite 308 in SS and now have 2 more (T3X CTR and T3X Varmint). Nice adjustable trigger, silky smooth action and wide range of styles and calibres. Even lefties.
