Hey- I was working on my DMR and admiring its 16" barrel when I had a bit of a brainwave.

The Firearms Act tends to make a big deal out of the length of barrels on all types of firearms. Why not push for AR15's that have a barrel of 16" or longer be non-restricted?
By my figuring is that if we come out screaming that all AR15s should be non-restricted, we're going to be ignored, and lets face we are.
But if we reason that owners of AR15s with barrels 16 inches or longer own these rifles for sporting purposes (ie: hunting), who's going to argue with that logic? It makes complete sense!

Maybe I'm complaining, but it seems like a good idea.

I have highlighted the two flaws in your argument, they have no place in the Canadian legal system when it comes to firearms.

18.5 is the norm...why would the gov even start with 16. It's the lower that's registered not the upper, so in this case size don't matter..:)

It's all or nothing.

Black or white.

The functionality of a short 7.5 AR is the same as a match competition 18" barreled AR, no matter WHAT its end-use may be.

Obviously I want them all de-restricted, that goes without saying.

It's the same as with handguns. Why one is Prohibited because it's barrel is 1 mm shorter than the one right beside it (in the restricted) class baffles the mind.

CC s. 84(1) "restricted firearm" (b): If a firearm has a barrel length less than 18.5"/470mm AND is centrefire AND is semi-automatic, that combination forces the firearm into the "restricted firearm" class.

Good Luck getting any AR off the restricted list... I`d love to see it, but good luck!

The issue being, whats to stop someone from swapping in a 10.5 upper after its been classified as NR.. that takes all of what, 5 seconds ?
perhaps if the front take down pin was permanently affixed, you'd have a better argument.

Don't think so. By simply removing the AR-15 from the named restricted list automatically AR-15's that are over 18.5" would be non restricted while those shorter would remain restricted. Obviously pushing to have the barrel length restriction harmonized with the US (16") would be ideal, but even getting the AR-15 off the named list is not likely to happen before the heat death of the universe.

Think of the headline: "Conservatives putting deadly assault rifle used in Sandy Hook onto the streets"

Did you say logic, sense, and firearm act in one cgn post? Crazy....

Besides barrels would have to be 18.5"

Also, at one point ar's with 20" barrels were non restricted, then they changed their minds again

This is such a pipe dream.

I just want an A2 carry handle, front sight & stock to look normal on one of the piston driven N.R. rifles to make me happier...

The fact that you'd now have an unregistered restricted firearm and would be in deep poo poo if caught.

Just like the XCR. No permanently affixed front take down pin there.

The only thing that makes the AR restricted is that it is prescribed as such. Remove that, and it would be classed like anything else.

Argue for barrel length for non-restricted rifles to be changed to 16" would save a lot of money for those getting 18.5" barrels and brings us in parallel to American rules around 16".

Initially, the AR was just another rifle. Then the Liberal Gov't restricted them. Joe Clark's PC Gov't reversed this, they were just another rifle again. They were then re-restricted. No harm in asking, but the Gov't isn't going to change this - the cries about putting assault weapons on the streets would be deafening.

The AR crowd mostly likes being known for owning death machines..er.. assault rifles....anyway. Why change a good thing?

Dj, time to start thinking like a lieberal. First, guns are evil and they kill people. Assault rifles kill children. Assault clips let gun owners mow down hundreds of innocent victims without reloading. You have to register your car so you should have to register all your guns, it only makes sense. If you de-restrict the AR then it will be unregistered which makes it a danger to public safety. But its an assault rifle so it kills children but its safe if its registered but its evil and kills people and assault clips kill hundreds without reloading and *BANG* That's your brains blowing the back of your skull off leaving you thinking like a fukcing idiot, er I mean liberal. These people are brainwashed stupid and cant understand why you would have a use for a black rifle other than killing people.

I believe it is the AR's operating system and internal parts that make it restricted. Any gun using the AR platform would likely be restricted but you can always try. Again, when the government is determining firearms classifications, common sense is the first thing they prohibit.
