new ipsc rig. Going DAA. Are the race master or alpha x pouches worth the premium?

I'm going to be starting up with IPSC soon. I'm putting together my equipment.

For my holster, I'm going with the DAA Alpha X, and for the belt the DAA Premium.

The new DAA Alpha X mag pouches are expensive to say the least. Is the extra adjustability worth essentially double the price?

Also, for my belt, I'm sizing it so that it essentially sits on my hips as opposed to my actual waist. Is that ok? Ideally I'd try all this stuff at a store but that is impossible...

Thanks.

good choices so far, the Alpha-X holster excellent, the premium belt excellent (for sizing add 4 to your waist size e.g. waist 34 get belt 38)....now for the mag pouches, alot of problems for people with the new Alpha-X pouches so many people are sticking with their Race Master mag pouches....if you don't have a huge waistline you don't really need the exctra adjustability of the Race Masters though and the DAA Racer mag pouches are perfectly fine and work just as well (plus saving alot of money)

With the Alpha-X holster, I'd highly recommend getting the thigh pad to go with it. I found the holster would dig into my thigh from the weight of the pistol and also the muzzle could rub against the side of my pants if I bend over to pickup my mags/ammo from the ground etc.

I don't see the need to spend THAT much $$ on the Alpha-X mag pouches. There are a number of guys complaining about snapping the pouch off the ball on the BrianEnos forums. I don't even see the need to spend $75 for a RaceMaster pouch either. The Racers work beautifully and only $45. Add a mag pouch to your rig for table starts.

DAA Premium belt are awesome. They're one of the stiffest belts out there.

I started this thread a few weeks ago but it never caught on...

Cool. I just got the belt, holster for a cz shadow 2, and 5 racer pouches. Got the muzzle support but no thigh pad. We’ll see how it works out. I like that I can just add an insert block for a Sig or a 1911. Looks like very nice gear and can’t wait to try it. I’m hoping for a class in July.

Really good setup , you're lucky you started out with good gear as alot of "newbies" waste a ton of money before finding what works well......I doubt the muzzle support will be of much benefit but I would definitely spring for the thigh pad as mentioned above...........if you have the time it would be a worthwhile trip even for a day or two to go watch the IPSC Nationals in Quebec City the end of July (you're in Ontario so close enough to drive there)

I think the mag pouches are way too much, most people end up with some CR Speed, or the magnet Black Scorpion ones, and they both work great. Most of the elite guys I got training from had CR Speed, so if that works for people there level, why spend double the price.

Just a word of warning, from what I’ve seen and heard DAA belts tend to not work well with attachments from other companies. My CR Speed mag pouches don’t fit on my DAA Premium Belt, and my Tek Lok for my holster barely closed on it.

I`m on the same page as this guy ^^^^^^

The DAA premium belt is really good, the Alpha X is really solid and simple to use but mine is still a little stiff / tight (probably just needs some more miles). For mag pouches I spent a long time pondering the options and went with the plastic Racers - they work perfectly - no regrets. I run a magnet in front of my first pouch (for pickups / holding an extra mag to make ready) and after my last (for barney mag) The magnets are incredibly strong and as I mentioned will hold 2 mags no problem if required

When I did my black badge I saw a guy get stuck to a door handle with one of those magnets on his belt when he got too close!Laugh2

The Alpha X holster is awesome and I recommend the thigh pad as well, especially if you are on the thinner side. The racer pouches work great if you are on a budget but I personally like the deluxe magnetic pouches as they are universal, require no adjustment and have great accessibility and retention (assuming you are using metal magazines of course). They also offer the bullets out magnetic pouches for CZ shadow and STI magazines and they save a lot of space on the belt which really helps.

The DAA Belt is great too with just the right level of stiffness!

I bought from you already. ;p

I was gonna ask you to add the thigh pad but it shipped before I could make the request. Arrives thursday or friday. The magnetic pouches look neat. Was curious about them but I've just spent a ton on ARs, NR, optics, extra mags and now this stuff, so I'm tapped out for now. :dancingbanana:

You can always add a thigh pad on your next order. The magnetic pouches are fantastic. They leave the magazine completely accessible so the body of the mag holder never gets in the way of pulling the mag off. They are also adjustable for angle and if you switch guns, you don't have to adjust anything.

I've got first generation Alpha X pouches and had the issue that plagued so many, with the pouch falling off the ball joint. The fix was simple, and free, and that upgrade (a simple 5mm ball to place under the grub screw) and now my pouches are rock solid. I did manage to tear one off while sitting down on a picnic table. Caught the pouch and my entire body weight (fat) tore it off. A few minutes with a screwdriver and it was remounted, in the same spot, and it's good to go. Yes I banged up the aluminum dovetail, but a couple of whacks with a the screwdriver got it back into place. I was amazed nothing actually broke, as I've broken other pouches, including Race Master pouches, running into a wall. So I'd say you'll be more than good to go with Alpha X pouches. the extra adjustability is why I went with them, and it's worth it. As well, the inner sleeve with mag height adjustment is genius.

Ended up buying the data racer pouches, not the alpha-x. Have already spent too much on gun stuff recently but need to get that course done.

Holster and gear arrived today. Wife thought i was like a child at xmas. The holster is very easy to setup. the mag pouches (daa racers) are a bit more of a pita.I got them setup for my magazines (had to change the inserts), but they are not on belt yet. I see the advantage of the alpha-x mag pouches now. it's a pita to setup the racers but i guess you only have to do it once. Love the holster.

I believe the Alpha-X uses the same system of inserts so you would have had to do the same thing to set them up as the Racers.....other than what their main body is made of, the only difference is the Alpha-X uses a ball joint so there is more adjustability than the locking plastic adjustment on the Racers

All my stuff is DAA. Upgraded our revo gear from the Race Master to the Alpha X as it super easy to fly with and requires no readjustment when re-assembling. Thigh pad is a must.

For my semi rig the deluxe mag pouches are awesome but I don't see many being used. They work great for the 2011 mags and they are never ever falling off not matter how much you move. A side benefit is if anyone loses a spring just run the magnets over the ground and you'll find it in no time.

the Alpha X pouches use a totally different insert. It's much easier to install and includes a bridge for setting the height of the mag in the pouch. Inserts can be swapped out quickly and easily with no tools if you change from say double stack CZ to maybe a SV mag or to single stack
