Should I alter this rifle ? I have access to a Winchester Model 54 in 30-06 with a VERY well used stock and a barrel so badly pitted that I don't think there is much copper left on the bullet when it leaves the muzzle. The bolt handle is unmodified and the action has been drilled and tapped (side mount scope base ?). I dont know if there is any collector value to this rifle (read: will I kick myself if I alter it) but I would like to have it rebarreled, chambered for 338-06 and mounted in a new stock.

With the extra holes in the receiver and corroded bbl, it sounds perfect for a custom build.

Collector value is minimum as is.

The holes in the side may be for a set of iron sights. Like maybe a Redfield International for something along those lines. I agree with Supercub, looks like the start of a custom rifle if you can get it cheap enough.
