New to volume pistol shooting and am considering reloading 9mm and 40 at the combined rate of 20k/year. Have received much conflicting advice regarding the benefits/trials of reloading my own.

Can anyone out there give me some advice on what equipment I should buy, where I can get it and what it will cost ?

It would be useful to get some idea of the reloaded cost cost per round - I have seen much nonsense written in gunnutz about unit reloaded costs. The authors of these items quoting $5/100 for 9mm clearly get their supplies from sources unknown to most of us.....

All help gratefully receieved.............

go with a dillon progressive press, they will load the volume you wish, easy to change calibers and they are reliable, when i bought mine a few months ago, it was around a grand ready to load

$5.00/100 9mm is quite doable if you cast your own bullets and have to access to free wheel weights. My cost is 6.00 per 50.. I dont cast my bullets or the cost would be less. My cost to buy 9mm factory ammo would be at least $12.00/50. Better accuracy than with factory ammo.

Mine work out to about $5/50 using CMJ bullets. this isn't including my time or the cost of my presses.

Go with a Dillon I started with a Square Deal B and now use a 650. Both are great presses. If you check out this link it gives a lot of info on the pros and cons of each Dillon press model.

Also if you go into the reloading forum and FAQ from this link there is tons of info on Dillon presses.

I can load 9mm for $2.50 a box.

excell lead bullets $25.00 PER 1000
brass free
primmers wsp $20.00 per 1000
powder free.

I know I have some free stuff in there but basically I am looking at 6 cents a piece for a total of $3.00 a box after my keg of free powder ends.

For copper washed bullets I am looking at a total of 8.5 cents a piece for a total of $4.25 per 50.

The cheapest I can get factory is $11.50 for winchester win clean. But i must admit that I like the winclean better than my loads. Cleaner, and they have a great muzzle flash. I wish you could buy cheap winchester bullets in canada like you can in the states. It costs like 10 cents a piece for the winchester bullets. I can't afford $7.25 more per box for factory. For a treat once and a while yes.

Steve.

I'm no expert at this but it seems to me if you want to compare apples to apples, you'd take a look at Wolf Bullets:

http://www.wolfbullets.com/cartpric.htm

Looks like if you send him the brass you have, he'll sell you reloaded 9mm ammo for just 10 1/2 cents apiece. Its not like I work for the guy but shouldn't you be comparing the cost of reloaded ammo to the cost of reloading ammo instead of using the cost of new ammo for the comparison? Free this and free that notwithstanding, 10 1/2 cents is gonna be hard to beat I should think.
