New low for me with Winchester 270

First time I've come across this with factory ammo, 1 round was so short on headspace it wouldn't fire in my Browning. Just left a faint dimple barely visible. Even tried it again to make sure. How often does that ever happen?
It was Winchester Power Max Bonded, the rounds that did go off were all over the place anyway so not something I would have used used hunting.
 
Quality control seems to have gone downhill with factory ammo. Even with Federal Premium I would get the occasional flyer but not with my handloads.
 
I had a similar issue with Winchester 270 ammo. It did fire, but offered 14 inch groups at 100 y. In a Brno that was glass bedded and known to shoot...

What is the head space measurement on that short round? Cartridge Base to Ogive (CBTO) measurement using the SAAMI 375 datum line for the 270 Winchester?

Don't have the tools for that job lol.
But I will give the Browning designers props for preventing the undersized round from firing in this push feed design. I'm sure it would have fired in a Mauser design with no I'll effects.
I didn't even keep the round, threw it in the live ammo box at the range. I wasn't going through the hassle of loading one round jammed into the lands so it would fire form.
It had a dimple similar to a round loaded in an AR15 from the free floated firing pin, barely visible.
Probably a good promotion for using Mausers or other CRF when hunting with factory ammo lol.
 
You need a M1 Garand, they can fire rounds that are a little short. :evil:

In my 270 vanguard win whitebox was the worst. Absolute garbage. Maybe 4 years ago I had 3 ftf in one box. How is that even possible.

I will never buy win factory ammo again. I prefer reloads but if I have to get factory I have found hornady the best.

Interesting. I've put around 200rds of Winchester SuperX through my Savage Axis in 270 without a hickup. Had some federal blue box back out a few primers though, one of 'em damn near pushed the extractor right off the bolt and jammed up the gun!
 
The other question to ask is whether it a ammo problem or a rifle problem? Since you threw it away, it is hard to check. However don't discount the rifle, as it might have developed excess headspace, or you might have something blocking the firing pin. Or the firing pin and spring might have come loose. A light firing pin strike would not only cause occasional misfires, it can also lead to widely dispersed shots as the ignition is not consistent.
Try another brand, after you check out the rifle.

I shot 14 rounds of the factory garbage before the short round, then the last 5 of the box which all went bang. After that 40 rounds of various reloads from 110gr to 150gr which all went bang, ... it's not the rifle.
This isn't my first rodeo. I rarely shoot factory ammo though, and I honestly don't even remember why I bought it...must have been on sale or something lol.

Only $24 at my local Walmart... Which is still twice what it costs to reload the same bullet into 1f brass...
 
No more Winchester brass for me. QC is horrible. Out of 50 cases, almost half had neck splits (300 Win Mag). Certainly won't touch their ammo.
Using R-P now with my 270 and no issues whatsoever.

Your absolutely right Hitzy, I don't believe it's the rifle. I tried winchester supreme ammo in my kimber 7mm wsm and about half of the box wouldn't chamber, I pulled the bullets and resized the brass and haven't had a problem since. Winchester brass isn't bad but it needs to be resized, I wouldn't trust it in factory form.

Split necks seem to be the norm with winchester; I wonder if they have changed brass suppliers? Once fired .45 range pick-up brass lately, there are always a few split cases in the pick; split top to bottom. Always Winchester. I have old winchester .45 brass reloaded so many times you can hardly read the head-stamp, and it just keeps going and going.
Their .17 HMR will split about 25% of the necks in my very new CZ455 with 8" groups; Hornady and Remington never split, and shoot 3/8" groups at 100 yards.
 
I've recently encountered split necks after two firings in 303 British. I was able to resolve the issue by annealing. I'm guessing the combination of thin brass and work hardening during manufacturing is the culprit. I believe rifle brass is annealed more than once during the manufacturing process - perhaps Winchester cut a corner...
 
No problems whatsoever with American Whitetail 130 grain, Core Lokt 130 and 150 and Winchester 150 SP.

But the 1f brass has to come from somewhere and it's nice if it comes from your rifle. And buying new loaded ammo is usually cheaper than buying new brass and loading from scratch.
