New M-14 battery issue

Quick search didn't yield answers.

I just tried running a few dummy rounds through my new M14, it needs a solid hit on the charging handle to go into battery. It stops just short of the bolt rotating into the locked position. It's close enough to locking for the hammer to be able to drop, which would be a problem with live ammo.

Like I said, it'll go into battery if I ram it foreward. I'm sure this is fixable, I'm just sure what the problem is, let alone the fix.

Could you fine gentlemen, help this knuckledragger out?

1. Don't try that with live ammo, could be very painful.

2 Try a different mag

3. Check op rod guide, maybe loose and not allowing the op rod to move freely.

4. Take the stock off the rifle and remove the op rod spring, then holding the rifle horizontal, lift the barrel up and then down to see if the bolt moves freely in to battery and back, then do this with the stock on and spring removed, this will tell you if something is catching on the stock or the op rod.

just pull the bolt back and let go it should go into battery if you let it forward all the way with your hand it wont lock up. needs that force for the ejector to grab the case

To test, load dummy rounds into magazine. Pull op-rod all the way back. Let it go. Try it a few times.

If the bolt goes into battery then maybe you were not pulling back far enough.

If the bolt does not go into battery, reload the magazine and pull the op rod back under load slowly and feel for any binding.do the same on return (the bolt will likely not go into battery restrained like this).

I installed a usgi bolt into my m14 and had the same problem. Mine had a bit of binding and the spring was a little too weak. My binding was in relation to the trigger hammer and the greater diameter of the usgi bolt to the norky bolt. I did some creative lapping and purchased new springs and all is good now. :D

Make sure the op rod isn't contacting the stock at its most forward position. It can do that on the most forward portion through the stock. I had one that did that. It was leaving an impression on the stock near the cutout for the oprod. Can't be good for bolt closing.
