Hey all,

I just got a brand new M&P 9mm. I also purchased an allen hangun cleaning kit and some solvent. I have a few questions:

1. Should I clean it before the first use?

2. Is the lube that came with the gun alright to use?

3. most of the videos i saw on the internet of people cleaning their M&Ps they were using those little square patches. The cleaning kit i purchased doesnt have those, but it does have round cylinder bore swabs, do these serve the same purpose?

4. Can i use an old t-shirt/paper towel for most of the cleaning etc?

Thanks.

Of course you should clean it before shooting it for the first time.

An old t shirt works just fine for most cleaning. And it does not matter if your bore patches are square or round. What matters is that they should be clean and tight fitting.

After you are done cleaning it, lightly lubricate it with the gun oil of your choice.

X2 and remember lightly lube it

I got a new M&P 9 and shot it for the first time two weeks ago. I did not clean it before shooting and it functioned perfectly. No FTE FTF or anything. Flawless and I thought it was a great pistol. Just shoot it and enjoy it. Fun pistol but I find the 9 a little too light and I get bored fast. I prefer my 45's

1. Yes you should clean it. Take off all the grease that comes from the factory and put some small dabs of gun oil where the manuel says. Usually 4 spots on the frame, 1 on the trigger mechanism and 2 on the barrel. Its in the manual.

2. I don't know what lube you're talking about since mine didn't come with lube but I use Hoppes 9 gun oil.

3.The little square patches can be had for cheap at any gun or outdoor store, even CT carries them. I get the shotgun ones since they have a tighter fit and cleans better.

4. I use the blue shop towels. Use a brush to get the hard to reach areas. I also get medical swap for all the tough areas to reach.

thanks guys. just one more question, do i apply oil to the inside of the barrel after im finished cleaning it, or just the outside?

you can oil the inside of your barrel if your planning to store it for an extended period of time. Remember to remove the oil from the inside of the barrel BEFORE you go shoot it. DO NOT SHOOT YOUR GUN WITH OIL IN THE BARREL!!
Better off not even oiling the inside in the first place.

Ok thank you very much.

One last question, not pertaining to cleaning but something else.

Earlier today when messing around with it, i dropped the slide with an empty magazine. (the slide stop was very hard to release btw). But later I read on the net it can damage the gun if you release it on an empty chamber. Is that true? I know not to do it anymore but hope i didnt mess it up.

Dropping the slide on an empty chamber puts stress on the extractor. It probably won't break anything, but it is just a wise practise not to make a habit of it.

And after you oil the barrel, pass a tight fitting dry clean patch through the bore. This will remove any excess oil, and at the same time you will have a very thin oily film protecting your bore.

If you bought a new M&P there should be an owner's manual with it. Read it carefully and follow the instructions for cleaning and lubing. You don't _have_ to clean it before first firing it, but it's a good idea to wipe off excess oil.

A tiny bit of lithium grease on the guide rails of the slide would be even better than oil, apply with a qtip. Oil lightly, wipe off excess, and a good oil to use is Breakfree CLP, commonly used by the military. Just leave a light film of oil in the barrel, but yes you most definitely should apply a film of oil in there when cleaning. Enjoy!

thanks guys. another question that i couldnt find a concrete answer to...

is it ok to dry fire the M&P? I dry fired it a couple of times already, and some places on the net have said not to do it, some have said its fine.

I've had mine 3 days, put a couple of hundred rounds through and cleaned it after each use, it may not need doing but it's all good experience for us 1st timers.

I got a hoppe's cleaning kit from Canadian Tire and some CLP and additional patches from the gun club, seems to do the job just fine.

Let me know how your 1st shoot goes, I regularly seem to be shooting low for some reason, sure it's technique (or lack of)!!

Enjoy!!

Not inclusive of all causes, but a good starting point:
