So my hunting buddy says to me as we are pushing bush for moose, "I think I would like an iron sighted M14 to shoot at steel gongs and giggles."
Then I found him an unfired 2013 from a CGNutter who posted this rifle on the EE Forum.
Shipping was fast and most of the oil was wiped off and it came with two 5/20 magazines along with the sling and tools.
I made my friend park by the laundry tub and with a bottle of Palmolive dishwashing liquid, he got initiated.
You guys know how I like to see all of you bathe in that PCB oil from Zhina, all over the M305 rifles !!
It's a 22" baby, my buddy likes that classical look/feel / balance/ impression.
Some random observations:
The rear sights WORK! Holy POOP! I'm not used to that fact. We did not strip that rear sight assembly any further
The front sight is tall, still too tall. We needed 17 kliks (MOA) to get that baby zero'ed at 100 yards. Book calls for 10 to 15 kliks, needs to be filed down
Now some of you guys remember how I tight I like my rear windage knob.... super snug to adjust. I like the windage knob that requires YOU to have a free thumb push on the elevation pinion screw to relieve the tension on the windage knob just so you CAN turn it. I know, it's a struggle. Me and my competition back ground WANT the tension on there so that you don't forget to count how many kliks or MOA you cranked on that knob. It's a deliberate process to adjust for windage. Loosening that tension? Just half a turn (lefty loosey) counter clockwise and then your tension is how I like it for the zombie invasion.
The op rod guide was tight! Holy Jian Ghomeshi Grudge Fzck! Lottery ticket time
The gas cylinder lock timed tight at 5 o'clock and rubber mallet to 6 o'clock! TWO Lottery tickets with ENCORE !
We kept getting green lights from this rifle.
Bolt slop was usual.... sloppy. Welcome to the Norinco family!
Spindle valve had more that the usual Norico tight tension for PLAY that is... we could easily turn it with flat blade screw driver, that is a good thing
Stock was usual plastic, nothing new here
Indexing was on the money, more lottery tickets! Happy dance time except I fzcked up my left knee in goal (I'm a wannabee goaltender on the ice)
Trigger group seemed smooth, nice long takeup for that first stage. I greased the hammer hooks/sear engagement, just out of habit
Shooting Observations:
We centered the rear sights on the vernier (just above the horshoe tang rear receiver)
We made sure the front sights were centered and they were judging by the hasty chisel punch by the high school shop class students
First shot: dead center at 25 yards (lottery ticket time)
More shots: we moved a couple of kliks left and then right as we progressed out to 50 and then 100 yards. Life is good
Headspace: 13 and 14 thou with my RCBS Precision Mic... many of you from my 50 clinics will remember this gauge / mic (no need to buy one for $75)
Brass ejection pattern: 45 degrees to the right and front... Nothing out of the ordinary here...
Final Impressions
Don't buy one, buy two of them so we can tinker with them
This rifle was bought from Marstar, maybe I might buy ANOTHER one
Maybe the Xhinese shop class curriculum has improved overall, judging by the rear sights that behaved the way my Garand sights work, nice and tight, we still did not disassemble the rear sights for fear of any goofy surprises should the components fall apart during disassembly process.
Holy barrels, Batman.... this rifle shoots straight! I'm impressed. We were shooting Winnie Super X 150 gr PSP shells from Cabelas in Barrie, my former workplace!
Anyways, I thought I better post this blog while my knee is healing up and before I fly off to Spain tomorrow Sunday 16 Nov to meet my mom and sister in law in Madrid.
