So about a week ago i picked up a new unfired 300 win mag M77 Hawkeye. Like the fit of the gun, the slim stock, and the finish is much improved.

Rifle comes with a "hogue" recoil pad about 1/2" and a Ruger pachmar and another in Limbsaver did not fit. Another pad in a package fit great, then i realized it was a Parker Hale in a Limbsaver package....from when i changed out that pad.

So has anyone any comments on the Hogue pad, what pad fits this new slimmer Hawkeye walnut rifle? Scoped her out with a Zeiss conquest 4.5-14, and i would put it at just over 9lbs. Super nice looking rig.

No i love them. Just not available, i also have a short length of pull....

The Hawkeye is chunky heavy, but a slim stock, and the previous complaint of poor finish seems to be fixed. Nice finish, not old Browning......but nice. Unfortunately the lawyer proofed trigger is still there, mine broke at 72oz. Just like the recoil pad, the triggers that google brings up are for the Mark II. Opinions are mixed as to whether this will work on the Mark III(Hawkeye). So open to actual practical experience with getting the trigger to a usable 2-3lbs...

I have never done a trigger on one... But Hoytcanon mentioned that he does every one he gets.... An he gets a lot....

I was going to actually reccomend limbsavers, I didn't realize they didn't do the Hawkeyes......

What was wrong with the factory pad? I shoot 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, .358 Win, .35 Whelen and .375 H&H with the standard factory recoil pad with no problem. You say that you have a short LOP, are you cutting down the stock? If you do, just buy a "grind-to-fit" pad and you are all set. As for the trigger, if it is a new version gun, it should be an LC-6 trigger and they are easy to work with (YouTube is your friend), or if you just gotta Timney makes a good trigger for the MKII/Hawkeye.

Cool...good to know. Have not shot it yet. Every Ruger i have had needed a replacement pad.....well not the 243 and 7x57. As she sits now the LOP is already about 1/2 long for me, so adding length with the Limbsaver.....good and bad. Going to try youtubing for a trigger fix again.

I replaced the factory Ruger pad on my Hawkeye 375 Ruger with a Pachmayr Decelerator grind to fit pad. I screwed it onto the stock, scribed a line around the stock on the back of the pad then removed it and sanded it down to that line with sandpaper on the bench. It fits great and is a huge improvement over the factory pad.

Just a follow up on this thread. I am a fan of all things M77, tang, mkII, and Hawkeye. Perhaps I have been lucky, everyone shoots. Used they don't carry value, way better than new "value" guns.

So the Hawkeye 300. Awesome, as is, typical of me overthinking things. From my history, 5 crashes over 35 years. I went from shooting my 375 Rum, to overthinking a 300....insult.

Garden variety 3x4 mulie last fall. One shot, recoil, as is typical of shooting at actual animals....unfelt. Drag out of the slash, felt. Ribs, frenched, slow roasted, awesome.

i need a longer recoild pad or LOP for my ruger and the easiest was a slip on pad ... for the one that didnt like the recoild just remove and put a slip on pad on them ...

Hawkeyes are excellent rifles - once the triggers are sorted. Quite easy and inexpensive to do actually, I did my 338 WM and 416 Ruger. The triggers now safely break light and crisp. ;)

Ok, I will bite. What did you do to sort your Hawkeye trigger? Links to articles or video would be great.
