New mag spring in an old wingmaster?

I have an old wingmaster that I'm going to turn into a truck gun.

It is hardly used and was wondering if putting in a new 'police' spring would it be any different than the spring it has now? The mag follower is plastic and I was thinking of replacing it with one from S&J Hardware, is this necessary?

Any tips for trimming the barrel and drilling and tapping to put the bead back in would be greatly appreciated.

The follower from S&J isnt necessary, but its pretty beefy and is good insurance against jams. Im pleased with mine and am planning on another for my winchester. Police mag spring I personaly have no experiance with. If the police spring is cheap I guess it couldnt hurt.

Personaly I'd buy a shorter barrel (or old one to chop) and keep the long one too. If you chop it I reccomend truing it up and clamping it in a chop saw or something similar so that you're starting off with a failry striaght cut. I do this then I finish up with a file and check it with a square against the barrel. I also make sure to crown the inner edge a bit. Of course make sure it is legal length.

As for the bead, I use a scope drilling/mounting jig from work. If you don't have access to something like this just make sure you true eveything up, clamp in place tightly, and work slowly and carefully. A drill press and clamps will keep things more centered than a hand drill. Wouldnt hurt to start using a smaller thread, then if things go screwy you can drill and go a size bigger.
