I tried out my new Marlin 917VSF 17HMR today for the first time. I installed a Bushnell Elite 3200 4X - 12X a/o scope and used Hornady 17gr V-Max bullets.

After a bit of sighting in my first 25 yard 3 shot group was just one hole I then moved the targets out to 50 yards resulting in one ragged 10 shot hole. I next set up a target @ 100 yards and even though it was extremely breezy with wind gust I got groups that averaged 3/4" to 1".

This little rifle shoots like a dream...

I can hardly wait until the gophers start popping out in the spring now...

I want one just like yours... I am tempted to run out and get one today if possible.

Not sure if I want to spend the extra $ on the 917vsf or just stay with a
917v.
The laminate stock and stainless fluted barrel sure is some tempting bling bling.

Nice purchase ...enjoy
Did you consider a Savage? If so what led you to the Marlin?

Cheers

Yep. Those Marlins are accurate. I used to own one in .17 HMR and it was very accurate out of the box. I actually ended up trading it in for some $$$ to customise my 10/22 Magnum. The different choices in bullet weight is what made me go the Magnum route.

Trust me you'll love it, I just have the 917v but it is one fun gopher gun. Between it and my 10/22T my 204 barely comes out of the case. If you have already been using a centerfire varmint gun don't be dissapointed if you don't see them fly, though seeing the hit in the scope is always a treat. If you have only used a 22lr you will be amazed at the differnce. At 22 ranges it really opens them up and on a relatively calm day you can make hits at 150+ actually under 100 it's sort sick how easy hits come, it gets almost boring.

The only down side is the cost of ammo, going through 500 rounds of hmr in a day hurts alot more than if it was 22lr. but then a day where you would go through 500 rounds of hmr your probably going through 1000 or so just with a lower hit ratio

Damn my eyes:eek: I could not help my self .
I went out and bought one as well . Russells Calgary $369.99
It's all Camp Cook's fault he made me insanely envious(at least that's what I'll tell the wife):dancingbanana:

I could stare at this gun all day. Unfortunately for me, with no scope that's all I will be doing until I buy a scope.

This laminate stock is giving me wood.

Now to go scope shopping:dancingbanana: :D .

Hey guys, nice toys.

I'm looking at buying an 17 hmr in the near future. I have handled the savage, but not the Marlin. Are yours with the new t 900 trigger, if so how do you like them. It will probably come down to the trigger for me. Sorry if it seems i'm hijacking, don't mean too.

7.62mm

Mine is the old trigger, the first thing I did was swap out the trigger return spring with one from a pen, there was a noticable drop in trigger pull. I have heard very little about the new Accu-trigger rimfires, as much as I like the centerfire accutrigger I would have thought it to be half way revolutionary on the affordable rimfire world.

Of the common Hmr rifle choises that come up CZ, Marlin and Savage now one been able to prove to me that any is inherently more accurate then the others. So the decision is usually made on some other attribute. For me it was the trigger job semmed way easier on the Marlin than the Savage, and I liked the feel of the Marlin better.

Though I will probably upgrade the trigger to one of those rifle basix drop in's thias year. My 10/22 has a VQ hammer and that has spoild me in favor of light triggers.

My 917v is sure the plain sister to that funky fluted laminate job.

Does Savage make a LH model?

I've been considering an HMR lately, but semi's will waste too much ammo with my trigger happiness.

Yes (Savage) does, a friend of mine is going to buy a Savage because he is a lefty

Great looking rifle! So glad to see more people getting 17hmrs. One word of caution...start buying ammo NOW before spring and summer comes. Last year I almost ran out cause I couldn't get my hands on them. Its very easy to go through a case (500rds) in a weekend. Enjoy!

Congratulations Timo on your excellent purchase... I installed a 4x-12x but I initially ordered a 7x-21x Bushnell 3200 a/o mildot scope. I installed that scope on a 22-250 that I had sold to a buddy 13-14 years ago and I just bought it back last week.... :) I am selling my original Browning BL22 to a buddy and when he pays me I'm going to get another 7x-21x for this rifle as well.

I guess I had better go blow a few hundred dollars on boxes of bullets before they all disappear from the store shelves first though...

I never even considered a Savage just because I would never consider a Savage... :) ;) :) ;)

I found the trigger to be a bit heavy but other than that it was very good. I have been reading about a Rifle Basix trigger for this rifle but will not be doing anything with the trigger for a while.

If I may comment I have seen different .17HMR rifles at the range Savage Marlin and CZs it appears that they all are tack drivers. You really can,t go wrong with whatever rifle suits your tastes. The .17HMR round is a amazing little pill for target and varmint hunting.I personally own a CZ varmint rifle and am very pleased with it,s preformance out to 200 yards. The .17 HMR round is here to stay but I believe the other .17 round appears a little iffy. Now if we could just get the price on a box of ammo down that would be great Happy Shooting

I had one to i liked it it shot real nice the only thing about it that made me sell it is the ejector wire thingy mine broke i found it brittle , if they fixed that it would be a much better gun they do shoot nice though
