New Marlin series

An interesting idea and partnership with Hornaday. Now if Marlin would just bring back the .356 winchester and Hornaday would build some bullets for it we'd have a 300 yard contenda ;)

What they've done is bring back ALMOST what I want...I was hoping to see the old 336A with the 24" barrel come back. Now if they ever offer it in blued/ walnut, I'll buy it immediately. Even with the crossbolt.
I'm a bit concerned about the power claims. I'm a huge fan of the .30-30, and I think of it as a deer cartridge which, with a good shooter using a good peep sight or scope, and a rest, can use to 200 yards. I don't care what Marlin and Hornady say, I can't see them making the .30-30 a serious 250 - 300 yard shooter. Not ever. That's not to say I doubt their science or quality. I just think they've made the old .30 WCF into a less marginal 200-yard cartridge. Either way, I hope to get either a long-barreled Marlin or Winchester in '06.

In the 30-30 Hornady is claiming nearly 2400fps with thier light -mag-pointy bullets from a 24" bbl. They are also claiming decent bullet expansion out at 300yards with the new pointy bullet.
So that is a 160g at lets say 2350, nearly the same speed as a 303brit with 180's.
It still is not a solid "300yard'' cartrige but if I saw a mega-buck out that far I would take a crack at it if I knew my trajectory. I would never try that with a 170g flat nose at 2100. So mabey there is a little to be gained from it.
