Hey Guys,

Just got a new Maverick 88. What modifications would people recommend?

I use it mostly for small games, maybe some skeet shooting and waterfowl.

Currently looking at a sling, maybe a limb saver or a new sight. Saw some people recommend a new stock but I'm going to run it as is for a bit to see what I think could be improved.

I like to know what other people have done and maybe some good places to get some modifications.

Limbsaver's are a nice improvement over factory recoil pads, and in some cases make a big difference. Hiviz makes a Birdbuster Fiber Optic sight that is reasonably priced if you shop around (~30), sits on top of your vent rib and is held on by magnets. Is decent and comes with different coloured light pipes. Other than that, ammo!

I thought my Mossberg Maverick 88 was great straight out of the box. Recoil pad is plenty good enough. As for a sling I think the 88 is lacking a front mount? I've never been one to give a #### about a sling on a shotgun mind you, if I'm carrying a shotgun it's usually because I'm using it and want it in my hands ready to go for when a bird flushes.

Freddy,
Congrats on your new shotgun - use it well! I just picked up a 500 for myself and while it's awfully tempting to start changing things up, I'll just add a carry strap for convenience and use it for a while before doing anything else to it.

Except: if I can find a corncob forend for it - just for style, nothing more to it than that, My 500 is a 20ga though, and there is only a small selection of customizations available.

Cheers,
Neil

You'll also need an action slide tube if you want to go with an older wood foreend. The current 500s have the action bars pinned to the fore end, whereas the old style had the action bars attached to an action slide tube that the forend then attached to.

It looks like there's a 500 retrograde available these days, that probably has the newer style of forend without a separate action tube, but good luck finding the furniture for sale on its own.

The retrograde is 12ga only.

Thanks for the details on what's needed to swap out the forend. As tempting as it is, it's hard to really justify it

Cheers,
Neil

Check the feed and ejection port for sharp edges. Mine was almost razor sharp. A little careful use of a jewelers file the right shape will fix it.
