Actually, its not an 88, its a Lakefield-Mossberg 400G, made in Lakefield, Ontario in the 70's. Its the Canadian version of the mossberg 500. The same plant made the 64b .22 semi, and is now owned by Savage Arms. All parts on the 400G are interchangeable with the 88 & the 500.

I had exactly the same problem with some cheap black plastic snap caps and my 870; the ejector ripped chunks out of the rims...

Take a shell, pop the primer, get some crazy glue, get a white high quality pencil eraser, cut out a cylinder shape, primer size, glue it back in place. Snap cap for life.
