hey everyone

a friend (who took the course with me) linked me to this forum, and it's been great. I did my non-restricted last weekend and now I wait for it to come through.

I been reading the forum and getting an idea of what I want, and I THINK I have it figured out...hard to know for sure without having any exposure...based on the reading I am thinking rem 700 vtr .308, and still undecided about the scope but leaning towards either a viper 6.5-20x50 or a falcon 5.5-25x50

I am looking at shooting 100 - 1000 yards, I need to find a range in the ottawa area with that distance...my understanding is the connaught range is the place to shoot around here...can anyone confirm? is anyone a member of that range? any chance I can tag along with you and watch you shoot? I'd like to get a feel for the range, and the rules there, etc, so when I'm ready, I am prepared

right now I won't do any hunting, but I am not ruling it out for the future.

Take a peek at www.ncrra.com
The shooting target shooting season is done for the year, but I think the shotgun section is still active.

If you are looking at the 700 VRT with the integral muzzle brake take notice that most competitions do not allow them. And if you are just going for a practice, you may end up down on the end of the range with no friends.

Hi lebCRX. What kind of car do you drive? Just kidding.

Stittsville has a nice range and you don't have to be a member, you can shoot on a day pass on the week-ends. It only goes out to 300 yards, but that's plenty far to start isn't it?

thanks for welcome everyone

Out of curiosity, why do you say that I may end up shooting solo? are muzzle brakes/other gizmos as such frowned upon in the shooting world?

I sold the CRX about 10 years ago

I have a miata now :p just kept the nickname is all

Remington 700 is a great platform to start with, and build upon.

I don't know how much you've shot in the past, but starting off with a .308 Winchester might be a bit much for you.

Have you considered a more manageable round like the .223 Remington? It'll get you out a good distance and is a great round. Flat-shooting and comes with a variety of different projectile choices from the factory.

Consider it. My first rifle was a 700 SPS DM in .300 Winchester Magnum... Terrible idea.

I sold it and purchased a 700 SPS in .223 and am only now starting to get decent with it.

Much cheaper to learn too :)

While a muzzle brake is great for the shooter, everyone around them suffers from the blast. The .308 isn't known for it's punishing recoil, just ask the little 100 lbs girls that shoot target rifle at Connaught every summer.

...are you a member of ott-motorcycles.ca? LebCRX sounds familiar for some reason. I go by lh on that board, but haven't been active since I sold my 2 wheeler.

As for rifles, I picked up a 17HMR this spring and love it for a mini sniper rifle. Ammo is cheap compared to centrefire and I've learned alot shooting it. The 17 has a very flat trajectory for target shooting.

Thanks guys,
I am flip flopping between the 308 and the 223 actually...that's why I was hoping to go out to the range with someone and see the guns fire, it should give me an idea

my only experience with shooting is typical 12G shotty, 29gram - 36gram, 3-6-9 and 10 shot, over under, I shot about 300 rounds over the course of 3 weeks this summer when I was in Lebanon for the vacation and was fine, found the gun easily totally manageable, so if the 308 has recoil similar to that, I should be good to go

it's hard for me to guess what would work, I just dont want to end up in a situation where I regret buying a gun for either having too much power, or having too little...I keep reading mixed feedback, some are saying the 308 has tons of kicks, and is painful to shoot, some say it's a piece of cake

oh decisions, decisions

My daughter is about 5' 1" and weighs about 110 lbs. she had no problem last summer shooting a .308 during the DCRA Matches in Ottawa. Of course the target rifle she used weighs in at around 13 lbs. She shot this with a jacket and sling off her elbow (no bipod or support) with iron sights.

If you are new to the game and are or may be recoil sensitive, a fast twist barreled .223 shooting 80 gr bullets gives up nothing to a .308 shooting 155's out to 1000 yards. Reloading cost (something you need to do if you want to be competitive) for the .223 is about 1/2 and recoil is nil.

I was riding an R6 up till 2 yrs ago when my wife had a baby. B4 that an SV650 and B4 that a beauty of a little Rz350. Ah the memories. I don't recognize you on the bike, though it is possible we met at some point. I sometimes went to B&A and know John, great mechanic. He's the only person besides myself that I ever let touch any of my bikes.
