new to this site & new to shooting sports in general - could use some direction as to what to purchase - looking at 1 rifle & 1 handgun. Interested in general target practice & (down the road) PPC. Want something more powerful than the standard 22 cal. I prefer something I can grow with & not have to make another purchase immediately to upgrade as I improve. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome. I'm sure you will get a ton of advice, just wait and see. I know you already indicated that you wanted to start with something bigger than a .22 and while I would agree on the rifle front, I really would suggest a .22 to start off with in a hand gun. For your rifle, depending on your size and comfort with rifles and recoil, a 30.06 may be too big, perhaps a .243? While you indicated you will be shooting target, is there a possibility of hunting? because that would influence the rifle choice a little to a lot ...

go with a 9mm for the first pistol just as easy to shoot as a 22 and way more versatile can be used in most type of completive shooting my first time out i shot a 22 9mm .38 and a 40 and did about the same with each one just make sure the pistol fits your hand and you will be fine

Welcome, With firearms, that is not a problem at all, I like air rifles, all the way to big magnum bear stoppers, it just gets in your blood. :D
Find out what your able to shoot , and have fun, not pain with, decide if a hand me down sort of rifle/handgun is what your after, or just a beater , that you don't have to be real careful with. Its all so much fun, great choice of pass time.

Welcome aboard! :D
As you've probably already noticed, advice is readily available.
If you can get to a range and shoot a variety of guns, this is the best way to figure out what you like. Have fun!! :)

Welcome to CGN:) For a hand gun I would go with a 9mm. You will have to handle alot of guns to find one that fits you the best. Make sure that it feels good in your hand. As for a rifle that depends on what you are using it for.:shotgun: A .243 is a good choice as it is not to big, the recoil is low but the gun is still big enough for hunting. Do some reseach and ask lots of questions and you will find what you are looking for.
