I think it was about a year ago I put pics of my new Ruger up. Well, I traded it in (along with my Boito .410) and picked up a 581 series stainless/synthetic Mini 14. I have been toying with the idea of an XCR but the price of the Ruger is good (especially with a trade), and IMO you cannot beat the build quality and reliability of this gun! It's bomber.

Main reasons were that I wanted to mount a scope, and I wanted a new gun :D. I got a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x which I think should be a pretty good match on it.

Anyways, here's some pics. Cleaned all the crap off when I got it home and put it back together.

Enjoy your new toy. I've gone through several Mini's over the years and always thought they were fun guns. Not precision rifles, but not the accuracy dogs that they are often accused of being. I am now playing with one of the Target models. I'm cutting the barrel down to 18.5" and hoping to have a 1.5MOA coyote rifle.

Go to the PerfectUnion forum when you need any help...it's a treasure trove of Mini information and how-to's.

Sounds like a perfect yote gun if they don't hang up at 300 to 400yds. Are you going to keep or lose the "ADJUSTABLE HARMONIC DAMPENER for tuning minute-of-angle accuracy" (Ruger's tag line). Post a pic when you finish.

My yote gun is similar - but it's a Mini14 in a factory 222 Rem version. Puts three in under an inch at 100yds routinely with various factory ammo.

Wow...that's nice. I've only had one ever that was genuine MOA with the standard barrel, and that one had lots of TLC applied to it.

The Target will do MOA now with the tuner in place, and also with the tuner removed but with a Limbsaver Deresonator rubber donut in front of the gas block, but it took a lot of fiddling with the position of both of those items. Losing the tuner makes the gun much nicer to carry and handle, and lopping off a couple inches of that heavy barrel will improve it even more. This cut will remove all of the threading for the tuner, and I think that the tuner body will continue to improve accuracy...it will be a handle for one of my presses!:)

Take it easy on that .222 Mini. I think that they have some collector value, as not many are seen.

I have been doing some digging around trying to find what the best accuracy is out of these guns. I used to have one, and I have found a few companies out of the states that do pillar bedding and install heavy barrels (some really nice fluted ones at that). I will probably end up getting another Mini soon and do a build as well.

Check out Nutnfancy's newest report on Youtube called Mini 14 against the world. He seems pretty keen on the gun, always has. It's at least unbiased in the sense he's just running and gunning, can't fake that.

The mini's are often not as bad as people make out. On most you can get a decent improvement in accuracy by getting a gas bushing kit and putting in a larger diameter bushing.

Old thread, I know, but I seen one of these USA Mini 14s with the heavier barrel(20" sightless), and pillar bedding. I thought it was awesome. Make sure to get a torque wrench. Not repeating proper torque will degrade accuracy.

I have been tinkering with my 580. It is quite fickle with ammo, in terms accuracy. The two best that mine likes so far is the Nosler 50 gr and the win fmj 55 gr. I am going to try some 60 gr or 68 gr pills.

Last night, shot the Win 55 fmj's = Benchrest, with 4x scope, less than 1.25 MOA.

With a shooting stick, the main group (the ones you "know" felt right, were about 1.5" to 1.75" MOA. My gun has a different handguard, which I trimmed so it does not fit tight against the barrel. My Rifle is a fine shooter. no complaints here. :D
