Hello to all, im a displaced Newfoundlander living in the Halifax area, and iv recently gotten back into Shooting after a long hiatus. I was an Army Cadet for years and used to help with our local shooting team, shot air guns and .22 at a young age, my first centerfire rifle was a sporterized Enfield .303 owned my by father for hunting. I took down a few moose and caribou with that one. Recently i bought a Russian SKS, and a 1942 Mosin Nagant, not for any particular love of russian gear, just cause of the price. Im hoping to pick up examples of the major infantry rifles from WW2, Lee Enfield NO 4, German Mauser, American M1 Garand, and if i can find one a Janaese Arisaka. I also recently joined a local shooting club, had a nice day with both my rifles and cant wait to get off ship and head out there again. Part of the orientation was to shoot a pistol, which was a first for me and i got getting my Restricted Licence on my list of things to do, so i can get a pistol of my own, cant wait. Hello and welcome from Nova Scotia's South Shore. While it's certainly interesting to read the interests of members, I think you'll find that you get better interest and response by putting comments of this sort in the General Firearms Discussion forum, or perhaps one of the specialty forums. This forum is really just for greetings. I might say, though, that while living for a while in Idaho, I used a Chinese SKS as a coyote/varmint gun. It was excellent and I really got to like it. Enjoy the site.

I think I was shooting beside you that day,since it was orientation day for me too..I only had my .270 with me..my buddy had his tactical 12 ga....which he used for the skeet comp that day.. 29/40 for a first timer with a tactical sg...heheh

Thanks for the welcomes folks. Im from the South Coast, Bay D'Espoir... been living in the Halifax area for almost 2 years now. its closer to my work and a great shipping city, lots of opportunities.
Winchester_II i believe we were shoot that day, had a lot of fun touching off my new Mosin, needs to get a shotgun soon to try that trap shooting, that looked like a blast no pun intended.

Hi and welcome to CGNZ you'll like it here, from a fellow Newfoundlander whatryaat, haha, I'm from the Avalon pen, I just joined the St. John's Rod and Gun Club last year and love it, I just got into reloading my own ammo also which is also a great hobby you might want to look at getting into there's allot of satisfaction in taking out the BULL with your own bullets

Hehe, yeah no doubt, i been looking at getting the gear for reloading, gonna do some shooting over the summer and save up the brass then once i got a good supply, pick up the eqipment and supplies. Roughly how much does it cost to get started if i wanted to do it on the cheap.

I did it the same way, save up the brass because that can be pretty expensive. It can be a bit expensive at first getting all your gear together but it will pay off in the long run. I'd say that I have about between $600 and $700 into the tools but you can start off allot cheaper than that, best to get a reloading kit, I bought the Hornady classic kit it was around $400 then you need dies and shell holders which are inexpensive, I got other stuff right away like a trimmer and other things which you don't need right away, get a kit like a Lee (I think you can get one for under $200) and your dies and shell holders and your ready to go, so you should easily be able to start for between maybe $250 - $400. Check out somewhere like Cabelas.com for some prices but keep in mind they say these kits have everything you need to start reloading but they don't you still have to get dies and shell holders, dies are anywhere from around $30 and up and shell holders are around $5 and up and I find it better with two or three shell holders. Oh and a lube pad is a good thing to have also for around $20 for the pad and lube. I hope this helps, but I'm not exact on the prices you could get off even cheaper like I said Lee has cheap kits ant they are good quality I just happened to like the Hornady. Oh and another must have is a caliper a decent one is around $50 you can get cheaper but I wouldn't. Also you may be able to get some of this stuff here at CGNZ in the EE (Equipment Exchange) forum for some really good prices, there's always people upgrading and selling the stuff they started out with that is as good as new most times.

Hey thanks for the info, i was looking at a few different kits the other day and im sure i can get the dies for 7.62 x 54r somewhere, just gonna collect up the casings for time being and maybe get the fam to pick up some of the stuff for my birthday or xmas, haha. Gonna keep shooting surplus in my sks cause thats cheap, if it dries up ill switch over then. The same big gear can be used for pretty much anything right, just gotta switch dies for different calibers, im planning to pick up a few other different gun over then next year or 2.

AHHHH Christmas is great, the wife gave me my stuff (the kit anyway, I picked up some myself) Christmas past so I'm new to reloading but it's a great hobby and I tend to shoot allot so I think I'm already saving money at over $30 a box of 20 for 300 win mags and over $20 for 243s for cheaper factory bullets I'm making them for about a third the cost.
