I just found time to open my newest scope that I ordered from Prophet River... A Nikon Monarch M5 4-16x42 SFP. What a well made scope! You can clearly see how this was Nikon's flagship model.
But...
"Small" problem: The windage knob does not move at all!
It appears seized. I read the owners manual cover to cover and I see no reference to a windage locking mechanism. Am I missing something?

The side parallax knob and elevation knobs turn freely, but the windage is completely seized.

I can bench press 225, and I cannot move the windage, so this is not a strength issue. I don't want to bugger it.

Any suggestions before I return it? I really want this particular scope and I bought the last one, so I really don't want to return it.

hmm, i know that in the extreme cold my dial gets stiffer. Maybe try "warming" it up with a hairdryer?? Could be the grease in there is stiff?

I don't own any Nikon optics so just guessing here but see if it is supposed to lift up before rotating.

It's in my heated gun room. I almost stripped the skin off my forefinger and palm. I don't think it's grease.

Oh well, I'm not worried, PR stands behind their products. I will likely just return it. A shame, as it's really nice and exactly what I needed.

Nikon got out of the rifle scope business at the start of the year, so you might have fun getting it fixed/replaced...

They said, that they still will honor warranty. Just optic division wasn't there main source of income, and rather divert funding to their more profitable divisions.

Suggest you put the scope in ‘V’ blocks and rotate it while looking through the scope (use a shoebox).... it is just ‘possible’ someone has reefed the windage to the end of its travel and you are simply trying to tighten it further. As you spin the scope you will see if the reticle describes/traces an oval movement against the background ... if it does you may have found your problem.

The issue is that the scope's windage knob is seized. It does not turn in either direction. Because it is brand new, out-of-the-box, I can only speculate that during manufacture, some sort of adhesive leaked into the windage gears. Let me tell you, short of using vice grips and mangling the windage knob, it's not going to move with any manual force. It's a real shame, as this scope has a very classy hunting profile, and crisp, clear glass. The elevation knob runs with crisp positive clicks. It's just a great scope overall.

Post a request in the general forum, there are a lot of good mebers on the site. Year's ago I had a gent in Kamloops volunteet to purchase a couple of leupold scope for me.

Bought two new in boxes Japanese-made Bushnell Elite 3500's. I'm good for now. PM me if you want to know where I found them.

bushnell elite are very good but a shame no more made and bushnell made in japan will be rarer ... note i never used their warranty center as their elite products are well built and can handle our lovely weather very well.

The Elite scopes have nice optics from what I've seen but eye relief sucks big time. Some not having more than 2.5 inches.
