So my R should show up any day now and im trying to decide what to purchase. I have fired the M&P9, glock 9mm, browing 9mm. I'm going to get a 9 as it seems to be one of the more economical ways to put lots of lead down range and its something that the wife can shoot. Eventually i will get a .22 pistol for the kids but they are not big enough (imo) to be shooting handguns yet.

new M&P9 range kits are $660-700 and i have a 0 bullet gun.
or...
do i buy a used gun?

I have never fired an H&K usp, but used they seem to be used $5-600, new about a 1000. (any thoughts on these? ive never seen one in person).

I want to stay in the 4-700 range as I figured thats a decent starting point. I have seen lots of glock and sig threads, but havent found too much on the H&K. I'd like something that I toss in a mag, and it works, but if it does break i can get parts easily. Doesnt need to be extremely fancy, I have looked at the norinco's (online), but again dont know anyone who has one and it seems the sig clones in 9 are always out of stock.

Crash,

Based on looking for 9 and your statement above (I'd like something that I toss in a mag, and it works, but if it does break i can get parts easily. Doesnt need to be extremely fancy) I would recommend a Glock 17 or an M&P to start. I prefer the Glock myself. Goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Parts are plentiful and about as simple as you can get. You can acquire a used Glock for $500-$600.

HK makes a beautiful product but parts can be limited. I have my eye on a HK45 at the moment ;)

This is just your first pistol. There will be many more to come so try a few out!

Well if the wifey is shooting it as well, the M&P will win her over in ergonomics alone esp with different sized backstraps. The Glock's grips are a bit larger so if she has small hands, she might not like shooting it much.

Generally speaking, going used on a Glock 17 or a M&P 9mm is a pretty safe bet. Most people don't shoot nearly enough to do significant wear on them. Use the money saved to buy a few more magazines and some ammo.

I think i will put the S&W is at the top of the list, followed by the glock. I'm gonna see what there is in the EE.
if the wife takes enough of a liking to it, its a good excuse to buy another gun lol

This is definitely true - the average shooter doesn't shoot enough in 10 years to "wear out" a Glock or M&P. My M&P has fairly high mileage on it (50,000) and it still functions just fine.

Do NOT try holding or shooting a CZ or you'll have another to add to the list and just become confused..... :D

I've lost count of the folks I've heard that KNEW they wanted some gun or other and then switched after trying a CZ full size metal gun. They all either changed their minds over to the CZ option right on the spot or went away with a lot of thinking to do. I've personally converted a good half dozen such folks myself and I've talked to many CZ shooters that went CZ due to the same thing happening to them. We're talking 75b, 85 or 85Combat and SP-01 Shadow here.

Women with small hands fit the CZ well also. At least for shooting in SA mode. And they seem to like how the heavier all steel gun soaks up recoil.

^^^^^ Nailed it.. have a Glock 17 as well and wife liked the lightness of it, till she shot it.. now it's the CZ Shadow or nothing..

Funny.....mine loves the shadow too...got the aluminum slim grips on...seems to fit her great, and she likes the weight over my sig or gp6.

Started out with a used M&P 9 but since have taken a liking to my Beretta M9.
Large gun but man the recoil is very limited compared to the smith.

OP, it would be a good idea for you to try these pistols (with the wifey :D) at a range that rents them. Is there such a thing in the Ottawa area?

If you want reliability and accessories, I'd go with the M&P 9mm range kit. IIRC it comes with the gun, holster, 2 spare mags, and a magazine pouch. You could also try a Ruger SR9 (I have one and love it) and accessories such as holsters and mags + mag pouches are readily available. It's in your budget too, as well as the Glock and S&W M&P range kit. Glocks are like mice, they're everywhere and so are the accessories for them.:D

I usually buy new, especially if it's a plastic fantastic. I DID buy a Norc 1911A1 clone used however, and I've had zero troubles with it. It depends on the previous owner.

I don't know if there are any ranges around that rent guns. We have some work to do tomorrow so I'm going to ask around and see of anyone has a cz or usp they would be willing to let me try. I may look into upping my price point a bit seems like for a few bucks more there are more guns to look into.

Do the norinco's have the same feel as the brand name ones? I've never shot a norinco anything. I could just toss my cash into two different knock offs. See what one i like more sell them both and buy the brand name one. I think I will do some searching the interwebs for prices/reviews on available 9's.

I'm glad I asked here as it's expanding my search.... Some of you guys may cause me to spend some extra money. Ha

Crash, there's a huge amount of fun to be had with handguns. But after a few outings simply standing in one spot and feeding magazines of ammo downrange at indifferent paper begins to lose the magic. So I'd suggest that you attend some of the competitions in your area. IPSC and IDPA are the biggies. But clubs often have some flavour of other events such as Steel Challenge or some variation. All of which are handgun focused.

If you show up early and stick around and help with scoring and taping and mention that you're looking at buying your first gun and what do you need to join that event you will be quickly taken under wing and offered any number of guns to try. And more likely than not a CZ or two will be in there.

But don't just show up and watch for an hour. You need to weedle your way into their good graces by helping out instead of standing around. Bring the wife along as well. She may just get caught up in the fun. I've yet to find such events where the big majority of the folks were not great fun to hang out with. After all on a GOOD day at a match we only shoot for about 5 minutes total. But it's an intense 5 minutes. So the folks you're there with had best be good company.... :D
