Recently obtained my PAL here in BC, Looking to buy my first Non restricted.

Main interest is hunting and long distance shooting. Interested in the .308 or .300WM rounds

Narrowed the guns down to

- Steyr Scout
- Tikka T3 Tactical
- Remington Model 700
- Savage Arms 10BA
- Savage Arms 110BA

As childish as it sounds I liek the more tactical look (and yeah I know I'd end up paying the premium on "tactical")

Optics for another time (however I like the Nightforce demos I've seen)

And suggestions, directions, or tips are greatly appreciated.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Being very interested in getting a Tikka myself, just thought I would mention that the T3 CTR, and Varmint lines offer almost the same features, and are a bunch less dosh. But I'm sure you've taken quite the long look at all of them, like myself.

You should just get out to a few shops and handle some of them, and see what you think of them.

Have you shot both .308 and .300 Win Mag? .308 is cheaper to buy or reload with more ammo options such as the military surplus stuff. .300 Win Mag is more recoil for sure so it depends on whether that bothers you. All the rifles you mention are good rifles, it all boils down to personal preference, some rifles just feel/fit/shoot better for different people. I have 4 .308's so I am a bit biased, but if I hunted, a .300 Win Mag would be a good rifle to take most anything out there.

Yeah, At the moment I am saving up at a bare minimum of 4k before I begin purchasing, I am going into a shop soon with a colleague to look around though, maybe that will steer me to some other suggestions.

I have not, Highest i've fired is a 7.62. Recoil, isn't going to be a big issue for me as I do plan on making the first shot count. Only reason I want the .300 is because I want to feel it and go "yep... it's dead". I have considered the muzzle break and stuff like that too. I can honestly see the .300 end up sitting "on the wall" so to speak due to the high ammo prices but again, not that big of deal for me as I dont plan on firing it like a machine gun with the trigger zip tied.
