New PAL owner in need of recommendations

Hello, Neighbours.

Just got my PAL. I'm looking for some recommendations.

I'm looking at a Ruger 10/22 takedown as my first pickup. I've done a decent amount of shooting but never any maintainence, and I've been told the takedown Rugers are very easy to learn and clean. The magazine restriction is unfortunate for the 10/22, so I am open to alternative .22LR options. I know there is a magazine adapter for the 10/22 so it can take Remington(?) mags, anyone have any experience with this?

I'm also looking at either a Ruger PC9 or FO FX-9. The PC9 has my attention if I go with the 10/22 as they are similar and thus it would be familiar for me to learn my way around it. Anyone have preference between these two? Or is there another 9mm carbine I should pay attention to?

Thank you for your input.

Welcome

New shooter/hunter myself. I went with the 10/22 non takedown then swapped chassis and other parts already. I opted out of the takedown for the simple fact of the zeroing issues I have read about after taking it down each time. I also plan on using mine for hunting. I can tell you that the regular version tears down for cleaning and whatever you made need in no time at all. I had an extended magazine release and the Auto Bolt release mod along with it installed in a new chassis in under 30min just from watching a few videos on youtube. Id say it comes down to what you plan on doing with the rifle on which one to get.

As for the magazine adapter you can do Magdump.ca has SBI adapter for $90 plus tax and shipping and I think the 22 round remington 597 mag for like $38 that works with the adapter.

It wont let me post photos of my build. not sure if its im new to here or im not doing it right. feel free to message me and I think I can share them that way

10/22 are really awesome, there’s so many parts available to build them up in so many ways. Don’t get discouraged by not having “all the gear” like cleaning setups and bipods and rests and scopes. You’ll acquire things over time and find things you like and don’t like. Get a bore snake and some CLP and some toothbrushes for cleaning and learn how to disassemble and put it back together. From Brand new guns ship with thick heavy oil made for storage not for use and need to be cleaned. This will save you from a bunch of feeding issues right away. 22lr ammo is kinda dirty and until you break in your action in a little, it can get gummed up quickly.
Welcome and happy Shooting!

Hey Barn. I highly recommend the 10/22 take-down model. I've had 2, but I have sold everything in preparation of going into a seniors care home. The ability to take down your 10/22 to fit into a back-pack can not be underestimated. It is just as accurate as the non-take-down model, and much easier to clean. Stay away from the Thunderbolt 22's. They are very dirty, and require much more cleaning than CCI MiniMags, which were my favorite. You can buy a 3 prong-10 round magazine easily, and these work very good. No need to go into a relatively expensive conversion.

10/22 rifles are great. I have a few, plus several Ruger Mk II and MK III pistols. I can't count the number of bricks of .22 I have fired over the last 39 years and the Rugers have been very reliable and accurate. Please remember that the most damage done to a .22 is too much cleaning! The barrels are made from low carbon steel that can be damaged by over-aggressive cleaning and modern ammo is not corrosive so they don't require too much to keep clean.

The Ruger 10/22 is a great little gun in either platform . At present I have 58 different 10/22 , some collectors some shooter . Got my first one in 1976 , it's a second year production , it's been to Eng., Ire., and Europe . taken every small game up to fox with Stingers , still running great and shooting straight ! As to mags , I was lucky enough to pick up a Canadian Edition GSG 110 rd. drum mag . Won't work in the Charger , don't ask how I know ! Take it to the range on occasion to use in the 10/22 with the Thomson Sub gun kit for newbies to play with , The look on their face when they cut loose is priceless . Good luck with your Rugers and may you buy many more !

If the takedown isn’t holding zero, try tightening the tension ring until the barrel is unable to attach, then back it off until it can.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, try using barrel-mounted optics. Either:

(1) barrel-mounted open sights
(2) barrel-mounted red dot rail (eg. Magpul X-22 with the Backpacker stock)
(3) cantilevered barrel-mounted scope rail

My advice to a new pal holder is buy what is the best reviewed by the most people. Ruger is almost bulletproof in that regard, brands like Ruger and Tikka are highly praised for a reason.
Stay away from Mossberg rifles, (just the rifles) and Remington firearms in general unless you can verify which company made the Remingtons.
