I've recently fallen in love with pistol shooting again.

I acquired a couple of new autos a couple weeks ago and consequently my old Vanguard case that I've been using for the last 7 years no longer cut it.

I have pelican cases for work, rifles, camera equipment... pretty much anything I need a case for, I've got a pelican for it. So when I decided I needed something to hold all of my autos, the choice was easy.

I looked at both the 1500 and 1520. The 1500 may have worked, but I wanted the extra depth that the 1520 offered. Here are some size comparison photos between the new 1520 and the old briefcase style Vanguard.

As you can see it isn't much wider than the old case, but it is considerably deeper. This depth allowed me to load the pistols and magazines into the case vertically both saving space and maintaining a clean look with the pick n pull foam. The shallow slot on the right is for a .22 conversion for my Glock 17. The long slot along the bottom is for my ATT and reg. certs.

The pistol slots are all the same size with a notch pulled out of the foam to the right of the ejection port of each pistol to accommodate a cable lock. I put another piece of cut down foam on the muzzle end of each sloth to support the front end of the pistols as well.

What say you, CGN? Anyone else got a Pelican setup they feel like sharing?

The vanguard looks nicer to me.
It looks like you have enough room in the pelican to use regular combo trigger locks if you didn't want to use cables.
Pelican cases are great for rough use and waterproofing, but they are bulky, heavy and scream "valuables in side" if left in plain view.

The Vanguard was cool, but it doesn't fit all the pistols + mags. My guns had a tendency to slide into one another in that case too.

As far as the bulk is concerned, it's no wider & not much heavier than the Vanguard.

I prefer the cable locks as they have, in my experience, been easier on trigger guard finishes.

How much do these hard cases go for, look pretty convenient, instead of taking individual cases.

There are deals to be had online if you look, but I bought mine from 911 Supply in Calgary for approx $180. They aren't cheap. There are similar products on the market under different brands that can be had cheaper. Pelican is covered by a lifetime warranty too. No questions asked, it breaks, you get a new one.

You can get Pelican Cases everywhere. Century Vallen, Gregg Distributors, Acklands to name a few. These guys sell replacement Pelican foam also.

Wow that is a nice setup OP. Did you have a hard time cutting away the foam?

I have been looking into the pellican cases for a while and have been unsure weather or not to buy one. I think after seeing that setup that I am now sold on the pellican!

Thanks! I'm really happy with how it turned out.

As far as the foam is concerned, it's what they call "pick n pluck" and it's really easy to do if you need to make rectangular cavities, if you want something contoured, you'd need solid foam and an electric bread knife or something else to cut it.

Once I had decided where I wanted everything, it took about half an hour - 45 mins to customize.

Best/easiest way I have found to cut pelican foam:

Position everything you want on the foam, but do it mirror/image of how you want it. You do this because when you are done, you are going to flip the foam over. This way you wont see any of the remaining black sharpie marks and rough edge cuts.

Trace everything with a black sharpie. You don't need to be ULTRA detailed with the little bumps and notches of the borders, as the knife is not a completely precision cutting tool.

Put the foam on the edge of a table, and use an electric carving knife to cut out all the pieces. They are like $25 from CDN tire or Walmart. Keep the knife completely vertical. Any angles and your gun/parts might not fit properly into the foam.

Remove the cutouts and flip over the foam. If you kept the knife vertical, everything should fit nicely into place.

Ah okay it makes sense now!

Where do you guys reccomend I purchase one of these, they are everywhere really. What would the best be? Im in Ontario.

@Stephen1546 Thank you for the advise, will be using it shortly! Il have to drop by CDN tire this week sometime.

If you can not find it in north bay, there are many Canadian online retailers. I have the OPs case for work. It is a very common size and popular with photographers as well, so many retailers that sell camera supplies would carry it as well. I get the bigger or hard to find cases form B H audio/video out of New York state shipped to me. There is also custom case co. out of Ottawa and Canada pelican case out of Vancouver.

For cutting the solid foam i would co for the electric knive too. I took my time with an Olfa exacto knife with a fresh blade and it turned out OK, in hindsight I should have gone the electric knife route. +1 on the mirror image/trace on the backside for a cleaner outcome.

Right on sounds good. Thanks guys.

I've been looking for something similar, I had bought some cases at a gun show and the locks broke so now it's a bit of a pain bringing multiple pistols to the range. I have a setup that most people are envious when they see it for transport (Costco had a folding wagon I picked up so everything goes in there and I look like a little kid pulling his wagon to the sandbox). Anyways, keeps everything together, guns, ammo, targets, tools, cleaning supplies, stapler, etc. No multiple trips, no arm fulls of stuff, and I still have a free hand for my bottle of water. (the wagon also has a drink pocket if needed)

but back to cases. I will have to price this out, I just don't like wasting cable locks on locking all my individual cases when I can lock just one and bring that in my little red wagon :-D
