Hi All

So I am heading down to Calgary to handle some pistols - I am pretty sure I want a cheap plinker to start with like the P22, Is it a semi-auto like a glock? or is it DA and each trgger pull will be 12 lbs?

I am new to pistols and want to buy one because I CAN :)

more about "I CAN"... I called wholesale sports in Calgary today to see if they had them in stock... The salesperson told me that if I purchased a pistol that all my references would be called in the 5 day "cool off" period before I could take possesion.

Is that true?!?! every restricted purchase will require the approval of my references I stated on my FAC/PAL/RPAL??

Please clarify this for me... I only have a non restricted registered to me right now.

The reason I am concerned is that I am trying to fly this purchase under the radar of my wife. As we all know significant others have radar better than the US military. A call from the CFO is likely to let the cat out of the bag.

that said my references were all contacted during the app process ...

When you guys buy a pistol what is the process that ensues?

That sounds like a big load of BS to me. First of all, they can't call your references because they don't know who they are (that info is confidential and the gun shop has no way of knowing it). Second, there is no such thing as a "5 day cool off period". Your "cool off" period is the time it takes for the government to issue your temporary ATT (which usually takes much longer than 5 days).

Either the clerk at Wholesale Sports was on drugs or he was having some fun at your expense.

EDIT: do you mean that the Firearms Center will call your references? That doesn't make any sense either, as the clerk wouldn't know what the firearms center will or will not do (none of my references were ever contacted either when I was applying for my PAL or actually purhcasing my guns).

The references you put on your PAL application may or may not have been contacted during the application process. Once you get your PAL, dealers have nothing to say about it.
You will agree on a gun, pay the dealer and both of you will start the transfer process with the CFC.
Depending on the province, you could wait one (NFLD) to ???(Ont) for the transfer to go through and THEN you can have your toy.

"Waiting period?! But I'm angry NOW!" Homer Simpson

lol - yeah Icould have been more clear.

CFC contacting them... yes on my app I stated two refs in the spaces allowed...

Not trying to hide anything except the cost !!! :) :)

lol... i bought a new house, they said it had a "10 day cooling off period" in case you changed your mind... lawyer pointed out that only applied to condo's!!! Damn sales people.

Well, I live outside of a major centre, and went in one day shopping. Saw a pistol that I wanted, and told the shop that I would take it, but they had to get the CFC to do the transfer that day (I didn't want to either go in another day or pay for shipping). They wanted the sale I guess, 'cause I left for home with a 45 and a couple of boxes of ammo.

There are more shops than Wholesale, so if they don't want your money, go somewhere else.

About the ontario wait...

is that incoming and outgoing ? I am thinking of buying a pistol from a private owner in ontario - I live in Alberta.

I would expect that once payment is received the transfer is initiated and shipment can be made.

would that "waiting" for xfer in Ontario apply to a sale leaving Ontario?

If you are in AB, the guns you purchased are cleared by the CFO that handles Alberta owners (not guns in AB). Thank God you live here - the CFO is apparently much more accomodating than some of the Eastern provinces...

Where do you live in AB just out of curiousity ?

Gorky,

PLEASE, Don't call Ontario an "Eastern" province! We already covered this topic a couple of months back. Ontario is in "Central" Canada. Would it make sense for me, posting from Newfoundland, to say the "Western" provinces (of Ontario and Quebec)?

Generally, the CFOs for the Atlantic or "Easternmost" Provinces are quite good. The Newfoundland CFO office is outstanding and rarely does a transfer to me take more than a couple of hours. i.e., just bought a CQB and I had the new cert. the same day...guys at TSE were surprised when I called 'em to let 'em know the transfer was complete...and to please, please ship my new toy ASAP!

At the other end of the spectrum is the Ontario CFO. It must be something in the water, 'cause they all have a case of the "slows!" Fastest approval I've experienced selling a pistol into Ontario was a week, average time was more like 2-3 weeks. I don't know why Ontario shooters put up with the crappy service. Just recently sold several restricteds, one went to Ontario and it took darn near 3 weeks, several others that were started well after the first were complete and shipped AND received, while I was still waiting for approval of the transfer going to Ontario.

I find that BC, AB, Sask, & Man CFOs are usually on the ball and there are minimal delays getting restricted firearms transferred. For Quebec, it helps if you know someone who has connections, like gunmanquebec! Now there's a man that can get you a fast transfer in la belle province!

As Gorky said, however, since you reside in AB, it will be the AB CFO who approves the transfer, so it shouldn't take too long for the Ont. CFO to send the file and get the ball rolling.

Gorky I am located in Central Alberta - use your imagination  - I am sure thieves frequent this boards too  I;ll leave it at that...

Since I am headed to calgary I wanted to pickup a pistol, looks as though I might be able to buy one but not bring it home. that sucks.

I had a non-restricted transfered to me in one day... I called the same toll free line.... at the CFC. (not province specific...)

A friend called to initate the xfer - I got the num - called in to complete it and it was done.

I suspect the process is different for pistols? or can it happen in one day?? I am an impulse buyer and seller! In a world of instant gratification... I want to wait the least amount of time possible :p
