New powder oppinions

Yea I was looking at some hogdon reloading data today and was impressed with H1000 and Hybrid 100V

It is all fine and dandy but there is nothing that says that those powders will work well in your gun, you will have to try them.
Reloading is a series of trials that will ultimately leade us in making a decision sometime we have to choose the lesser of two evils,
I n my experience the highest velocities rarely go with the best accuracy.

Yes I know this, which is why I started this thread, though I was impressed by the data for the two powders that I mentioned, don't mean that's the ones I'll go with. In the end I may just stick with H4831, after all I have here excellent results with that powder as far as accuracy with 165 gr bullets, but will I have the same results with an heavier bullet, who knows? That's the 64 million dollar question. Trial and error will be the deciding factor in the end. After all I'm not looking for the highest velocity, it's accuracy that I most desire in the end. Though it would be nice if the two ended up going together.

I don't believe that certain powders have any special magic accuracy stuff inside them. Especially within a manufacturing type, they are the same basic stuff with different burn rates. It is just a rule of thumb, but I look for the powder that fills the case at max load, or is even somewhat compressed, and gives the best velocity. This is a sign, in my opinion, that you are looking at a powder that is the right burn rate for your bullet weight and cartridge capacity. No, you don't have to load to that maximum velocity, but it does give you the largest window of a velocity range to choose from. If you believe in velocity sweet spots identified with a ladder test, it gives you more room to maneuver. And as just a practical issue, I restrict myself to temperature insensitive powders like the Hodgdon Extreme line. The way I see it, there are enough variable to deal with, without worrying about the temperature too. Hybrid 100V for example is not a temperature insensitive powder, and for that reason I avoid it.

After using H4831 for many years, I suspect I will be going to H1000 for my magnums after my current supply of H4831 runs out.

Great advice, thank you. I liked what I read about H1000 more then Hybrid 100v, I've been thinking about switching to that power for some time now but had enough H4831 not to do so until now. I also had a guy from here offer me Rutumbo to try, what's your opinion on that one for 300 win mag, 200 gr bullet. I'm still leaning toward sticking with H4831 or Going with H1000.

I have not tried H4831 but did try IMR4831. Seemed like I got pressure signs quicker than with RL22 so I stuck with that. For me RL22 works exceptionally well in my 30-06 so it's a bonus.

Retumbo is worth a try. The big "IF" is whether or not you can get enough in the case to achieve your velocity. Some go as far as to extend their drop tube higher to let the powder pack in better. I have never gone that far. Half way up the neck is about my limit. Some I believe will go to the top of the neck and compress it all in.

I load for the .308NM and Re#19 is 1/2" at 100 yards.......data very close to H4831 in my gun but groups tighter.........Harold

That sounds like a lot of powder, Ive never even came close to filling the case even with the reccomended max load, anywhere around 75 grains is still a good ways below the neck. I have to disagree with you on filling the case and compressing it when you seat your bullet, this sounds like a very dangerous and foolhardy practice.
