New priming idea?

I'm thinking back to the time I raided the school supplies and found a few old tesla coils. These things aren't big. They're just small, handheld, a little larger than a dremel and end in a point. They can be used to zap just about anything with electricity.

Something like this: http://www.sciencekit.com/category.asp_Q_c_E_440128

A week ago I had an idea for a 4-gauge shotgun, and I sorta redesigned it into a cannon. But I noticed that sometimes those primitive matchlocks don't go off immediately when they're fired. I'm wondering if it'd be possible, physically and legally, to replace the flint and wheel with an electric coil? The touch-hole would still be there, but instead of a slow-burning match touching off the powder, I'd put the tesla coil there and have it strike a point on the touch-hole that would be surrounded with powder.

Would it work? Would it be legal?

This is my first time posting so not sure if I am in the correct place for a new issue. Please clarify if not. I purchase a Remington 870 express last week and the wood is in sad shap. I am an avid wood worker and decided to refinish it. Got the stock off no problem but am having problems getting forend assemby apart. Do I need to take it to a professional gunsmith or is there a method that a handyman can use to remove the forened tube nut? Advice much apreciated. Kind regards Tanner.

Tanner, right forum, but you need to start you own thread, rather then tagging it into an unrelated one. NP, the mods will move it when the see it, but next time click on "start a new thread" rather then "reply" ;)

On the origianl subject, I believe that change the ignition from flint lock to an electrical system would change the clasification of the weapon. Flintlocks are "antique" and don't get registered or controlled. Anything else does! Sounds like a fun experiment though!:D

Oh, that's an idea I hadn't considered. :p:redface:

But there has to be a touch-hole or else it's considered a firearm, correct?

Never heard the touch hole factor, I believe it just needs to be a muzzle loader. You could make up a nipple adapter much like a spark plug. The big issue you will have is a spark does not transmit anywhere near the amount of heat to the powder as a 209 primer or even a cap. There would likely be a hang time as the small area of powder ignited by the spark spreads and ignites the rest. A 209 will engulf the powder in flame and provide much improve "lock time".

There have been a few ELECTRIC POWERED MUZZLE LOADER articles in gun magazines. Most use a model airplane glow plug powered by more than the normal 1 1/2 volts ( usually 3volt or 9 volts) the larger voltage to reduce lock(lag) time.

I thought the regulations read, it must be a primitive form of ignition then goes on to list, flintlock, matchlock, wheellock and so on.
I have lit charges using a wire contact that burns off much like a model rocket igniter and they worked great. I have a black powder cannon also and the most positive form or ignition I have used it a fuse. It is pretty commonly available and cheap.
There are drawbacks of course, like you can't really change your mind once it's lit and so on.
I am sure your idea would work but I an not certain of the legality.
Strip some wire and leave only once strand remaining. Coil it a little like a light bulb filament and put it in surrounded by fine powder. Connect 12 volts and it will glow and burn in milliseconds.

Your thread reminded me of something. In the 1979 Gun Digest, there is a good article about electronically igniting muzzle loaders and a pistol designed then to be fired with glow plugs as igniters. Very interesting read if you can find a copy.
