New reload feeding issue...

I am just starting to reload .45 ACP, and after making up a dummy round, I found that it won't feed in the Norc. I did apply a slight taper crimp, using a Lee Carbide FCD.

I am using Hornady 230G, XTP bullets, and the Hornady manual gives an OAL of 1.230, which I matched. Unfortunately, it won't chamber. I then tried to seat it to 1.200, which the Hodgdon site recommends for a Hrndy 230G FMJ, but it still won't chamber.

Do you think I should increase the OAL? I know the max is 1.275. A shooting buddy mentioned that the factory .45ACP we were shooting had an average OAL of 1.264 or so, and they fed fine.
 
Have you tried taking the barrel out of your gun and see if you can manually chamber it? Sounds to me like not enough crimp, but more info would be helpful.:)

Never even thought the crimp could be the issue, or try it in the barrel. Thanks Joe.

Well I wasn't sure if you meant the round wouldn't go into the chamber or was getting hung up on the feed ramp or.....

Okay, just removed the barrell and the dummy round will chamber. I guess it isn't feeding properly. It does get hung up. Is it length?
 
Don't those XTP bullets have a flat nose? They can be a bit more finicky in any 1911, and especially ones like the Norinco that may have a slightly rough feed ramp. Barrel could be rough too if you're getting FTFs that part way chamber.

But on the other hand, if you have no problems ever with feeding factory ammo in the same configuration, it's likely more to do with the amount of crimp and OAL.

I have never had much luck with the flat points in .45acp. In my Norc or several Glock 21's.

They do. The factory ammo was FMJ, round nose.

Ya, I am thinking it is the XTPs. I made up a few more rounds of various lengths, and while I got them to cycle, it wasn't perfect by any menas. I am going to get some FMJs and try those. All part of experimentation I guess.
