Kinda depends on what scope you're putting on it? - no shortage of good quality Remington 700 mounts around. My personal preference is for the Talley Lightweight mounts, or Warne vertical splits in their steel base

My .222 magnum wears a Leupold VX-II 4-12X40. But I can't tell you this is the scope that should be on your rifle, without knowing what your rifle is for, so first you have to define what it is you want the rifle to do. That will allow you to determine what the scope parameters should be, and once that's been decided, its easier to determine what you need for bases and rings. The purpose of magnification is to enable you to see the target, thus the smaller the target, and/or the further away it is, the more magnification you can use. But magnification steals field of view, and it can be very difficult to find a close range target, particularly one that moves, in a high power scope.

I like Pic rail bases. These provide the greatest latitude for scope placement on the rifle; thus you should be able to solve any issue you have with eye relief. If the rifle is used for long range work, a rail with 20 minutes of slope should allow you to use most, if not all of your scope's elevation adjustment. If you intend to use the rifle for a variety of chores, perhaps owning both a low power and a high power variable scope used interchangeably would be the best choice, with both scopes mounted in repeatable QD rings. Conversely, you might prefer to buy one high end scope, and use it on several rifles, where again QD rings would be the answer. The height of the rings must accommodate the diameter of the scope's bell to provide sufficient clearance with the barrel, but it must also be suitable so you can manage a good cheek-weld and see through the center of the scope. If your scope has a particularly large objective, you might benefit from an adjustable comb on your rifle, as the scope will be mounted so high you'll be resting the point of your chin on the comb. Hope some of this helps.

Hey bokmer..your post is very close to what i am looking for..a walking varminator..because i typically walk 5-10km every time i head out into the bush and i mean through the brush..not on roads..lol..i needed that feild of view as well as some magification..i ended up with the cheaper version of your scope. I have in the mail a redfeild revenge 4-12 x 40...paired with my short barreled .223 i think i will have my second favorit rifle..first being my 20inch hb rem 597..

Any recommendations for what ring would work good for my setup? Thanks
