New Remington 700P .338 Lapua. New photos on page 5 now.

IMO Rem 700 action is not strong enough for 338 LM cartridge, two tiny front locking lugs are barely adequate to hold that amount of back trust. That brazed bolt handle can't be counted on as the backup lug in time of need. The Ruger magnum, Weatherby Mk5, Brno602 or S/L mag would be much preferable actions from the safety point of view and peace of mind. My 2c.

You'll most likely stick a bullet in your bore at subsonic speeds.
Make sure the bullet come out before you shoot another.

Thanks, that is good advice with any subsonic load, I will make sure to check the bore.

Starting load will be about 30 grains of powder pushing a 250 grain HPBT.

If that works, I will go down from there and play around.

yeah pretty sure those are burris XTR rings, in which case they are backwards and must be turned around so the 1/2" nut is on the LEFT side of the rifle.

reason for this will be evident when you dismount them. the main mounting bolt has only one squarely machined face which needs to push against your rail on the front, as that is the direction recoil will push it in. right now, the round side of the bolt is forward, and it chewing against your rail and moving slowly forward.

I've heard this often, but I still wonder what it's based on. Has there ever been a documented case of Remington actions failing?

Good ideas right here - it can't be said enough... when working up subsonic loads:

START TOO HIGH AND WORK DOWN.

A stuck bullet = potential for your #### to fall off. :D

Very nice rig, thank's for the pic, now, i have found my next scope for my build, i'll give Jerry a message

As for the 30gr in a BIG 338LM case...
Besides being potential cause for big MV variation (charge position inside case), it can be very dangerous as well.

If primer doesn't ignite powder evenly, in worst case powder may detonate instead of constant burning. Common theory for this is that charge starts to smolder due to inadequate priming.
And if it does, pressures WILL go sky-high -believe or not.
Despiting tiny charge, it can be more what case or even action can handle. It has happened.
Basically, risk gets bigger with slower powders. (when case is almost empty)

For these reason, some also drill flash hole bigger ( a la .308)
Keep your goggles on -and if you find a good load - we are all ears here Better safe than sorry huh?

Just my 2 cents

Thats why I am using Trail Boss Powder. It fills the case with 1/3 of the powder charge.
