Hello everyone, I am a new member to canadian gun nutz and first time shotgun owner. And im not even sure this is the right forum section to be posting this thread, if so please point me in the right direction for future inquiries. As the title says I purchased a remington 870 express trio combo, was a fantastic deal from le baron (if you want details on this I would be glad to oblige). My main question is do I have to do anything with the shotgun itself before shooting it for the first time like lubricating, cleaning etc? The action is already quite smooth to operate as it looks lubricated. Any other helpful information for long term maintenance would be much appreciated. Thank you

Also, anyone know where I can get cheap buckshots?

Keep the exterior well oiled while in storage, I hadn't open my safe for a while, when I took out my 870 Tactical I was shocked at the amount of light surface rust.

Wow really?! How could that have happened when rust requires water to form

You would be surprised at the moisture content of the ambient air inside your house. Wouldn't be a shock if robertf was storing his firearms downstairs (most of us do). That's where the highest moisture content is.
Wonder if a dehumidifier would have helped?

Yes, it my gun safe is in the basement, I have since added one of those dehumidifier cans, but the pellets go pink in 2 weeks. I also have a hygrometer that is reading 50% in the safe. Now I'm in the market for an electric dehumidifier.

Sweat on your hands = salt and water

I also find the "express" finish on Remington guns seems to develop surface rust fast. But it usually wipes off easily.

I wipe down all of my guns every time i touch them. After every fall, I strip down my 870 completely and clean it thoroughly.

Anyways, get out and shoot it!

Learn to take it apart so you can clean it up after you shoot. It's dang easy.

O definitely, on that note, how often should you clean it? After every shoot? And how would I clean it, gun intact just wipe down the exterior of the gun and interior of the barrel? Or disassemble it and lube it and what not?

I personally don't clean the guts everytime. Just a bore snake down the pipe. I do a complete strip maybe once or twice a year (I don't use mine often). Most of the ones I seen while I was working at brinks don't get clean much either and they all work.

All you have to do after you take the barrel off is to push on the two tabs and the bolt will slide right out. Use a punch to get the two pins out of the trigger and you're done. Don't forget to clean the thread for the choke as well.

Make sure to clean it once before shoting. Make sure to oil the outside metal part and the interior of the barel. Use a clp.

Do not oil the little metal tab on the bolt if its a super mag, it will stuck...
On the express, from experience, make sure to clean a lot in the first couple of time you use it...

Take great care of cleaning the chamber. From experience, on the new express shotgun it got realy dirty after the first couple of shoot. The dirt was stuck so much that some armorsmith at sailbaron pointe-clair looking at the gun told me that it was scracth in the metal and not dirt. (he was wrong.. after ton of clp, it was clean, multiple hour of scrubing... )

For cheap buckshot, try wal mart :) sometime there is special.. at least in montreal. I get hollowpoint winchester slug for 4$/box.

Hope it can help you, I got my first shotgun a couple month ago and its was an express 870 super mag combo and got really discouraged by all the trouble it was but after you understand all the inner working, its a perfect gun.

Are you kidding? What kind of trouble would an 870 give you? There is 3 pieces to take out, and that includes the pump arm.

My advice to the OP:

Shoot it. Treat it like crap. Don't clean it. And most of all use it as a canoe paddle...

And it will always work.
There is no magic you need to perform. You own the most rugged gun on the market that doesn't need any TLC. Give it a quick wipe-down before you put it in the cabinet and that is all.
