New Rifle for Africa

I'm looking for a new gentleman's rifle for an African plains game hunt and here are the parameters.....not interested in anything outside of them.

1) Gun must be new and readily available.

2) Wood or wood laminate stock

3) rifle only must be sub 8 pounds

4) .338 WM

5) No customs makers....just mainstream manufacturers

6) open sights are not required

Sako 85 is one of the top contenders but open to suggestions........
 
Sako m85 Hunter Laminate Stainless ..aka..Greywolf definately gets my vote. For me, I personally prefer the model 75 stock but I dont think you will find a new one around Canada.

Also a Sako m85 in the laminate will weigh close to 9 lbs or just over with scope and rings I believe. For your information, my new Sako m75 Greyolf 338-06AI with a 24" #5 PacNor barrel that is fluted and powder coated with new style Sako Optilok rings and a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 scope weighs in just under 9.6 lbs (Corlane's built it for me).

there's one on the EE for sale...a Model 70 338 Win Mag ...not sure where it would come in as for weight but it would look right at home in Africa for plains game I would think....
 
Africa I would go with a Kimber all I can say is Control Round Feed :) Or like Supercub said a Ruger Hawkeye with the trigger done and beded. Even if it is plains game I would still have CRF.
 
It's too bad that you can't get the remington 798 in 338wm. If so, that would be my hands down choice right there....................You can get it in 375H&H though. That would be a gun that belongs in Africa!

Looking for something with a bit less recoil and flatter shooting...that's why the .338. Bouhuntress will likely be borrowing it for her eland.....

I would just take my Rem 700 .338. No wood stock though...:)

I don't believe Rem is chambering any .338WM with wood stocks now, just an XCR...

Go with the Ruger Hawkeye or the Sako (if you can get one in time) and a real nice 1-5 scope...

I'll be going with at least a 3-9 scope as shots to 300 yards are a real possibility......especially with zebra. 1-5 would be great for dangerous game but not well suited to plains game on the Namibian desert.

I would say the recoil from the 375 is more of a shove then the punch that the 338w gives you. not to mention with todays bullets and weights the 375H&H or ruger shoots plenty flat enough for plains game and whatever might get angry with you :cool:

I own a .375. I definitely wouldn't call it a push! Not hunting anything angry so the .338 will be plenty.

Well in that case, I'd go with a fixed 6x. :)
