Hey all, Im going to be picking up a new rifle in the next month or so. Im looking at either the 300 WM, or the 300 PRC. Ive done some research and found the only drawback to the PRC is the lack of brass for reloading and factory ammo is limited. As Im not going to be reloading for the rifle and the rounds are in the same pricepoint for factory rounds, is there any downfalls the PRC has over the WM? With more brands picking up the PRC chambering would it be a safe bet that more manufacturers with be producing factory ammo in the caliber as well? Thnaks for any and all insight and recommendations.

I think we should start seeing more reloading components come around for the 300 PRC. That's the route I would go. I've been a 300 RUM fan for some time but I think the 300 PRC will be superior. Easier to seat out the long heavy pills. Better barrel life than the 300 rum, better feeding. Nice to have the faster twist too. Their must be a way to make brass from either the 300 rum or 30 nosler or 375 Ruger if needed.

300 WM will always have more factory ammunition offerings but the 300 PRC ammo is going to be all about quality long range accuracy. It would be hard for me to buy a 300 WM when there is the 300 PRC available, but I also handload.

Really cool pic from Unknown Munitions.

Well I just had the same choice to make. I went 300 win mag because of ammunition availability . Mine is a hunting rifle for northern remote locations. Good luck finding PRC ammo in Dease Lake if things go terribly south. That was my thoughts and the deciding factor for me anyway.

Lot of new calibers, last few decades. Some come, some go. WSSM, RCM are failures. WSM obvious success.

Perhaps the PRS will help the Ruger case survive, maybe the 6.5 and 300 get some siblings to make a family. Even the WSM family has some underperforming bores.

My opinion, if you load.....go PRC, just dont pay a cool new kid on the block tax. If it's factory, go with Win mag.

Don't think the animals will be able to tell the difference. My choice if I was buying a new 30 mag would be the PRC.

No offense meant RJ, but king of the hill is a bit of a stretch. As another stated, it's the new cool kid. Even though it may turn out to be the best compromise for LR .30 Projectiles, there are a few that are equal or surpass it's power, and all the other players beside the WM have decent sized necks. Several .30 Mags will outperform the PRC, if only by a 100 fps, but they will outperform it. Anything much faster will torch throats like a RUM, or a Lazzeroni, pretty much good only for hunting unless you have a lot of cash for new barrels.

This is about marketing, I said the same thing about the 6.5 Creedmoor vs. the .260. Dakota did something like this many years ago, but it was proprietary, why we never talk about the 300, or the 330 Dakota today, or in the past for that matter. I have no doubt this is a great cartridge, but it really isn't doing anything that hasn't been done before.

Im not going to be reloading for the rifle

You don't mention what you plan on doing with your new rifle. Considering where you asked the question I assume it's for LR shooting. If so you might want to reconsider. To put it in perspective I use to have a Tikka Varmint in .222 Rem. It could consistently shoot sub MOA, but not with anything off the shelf, at best 1.5 MOA, pretty much all others over 2. Assuming perfect wind and a 1,000m capable cartridge, shooting factory is going to be limiting. Even if your shooting is perfect, your choice of factory is going to handicap you at a premium price. I understand not everyone has time to reload AND shoot, but The cheapest Lee kit will make better ammo than you can buy assuming you replace the scale with a quality one, and get a decent seater like a Forester BR.

My pick has been for the 300 Win Mag because it has been around for awhile , and there is lots of ammo around at pretty much any store including Wal-Mart , and Can. Tire . Regardless of how good a cal. is ; if it might be tough to get ammo ; then it is not worth the effort . Just my opinion .

Keep in mind with the prc you need cip length mags and chassis to load the factory 225g load. As I understand can't load a factory chambered 300 wm long like the prc.

I just built a prc on an ultimatum deadline in an ACC chassis and it is very slick.
