Hello all, I am thinking of another rifle project. I can get my hands on an MRC SS LH action with the large bolt face. I have been serioulsy considering a .358 Norma Mag. or possibly a .358 STA...any thoughts as to this idea?

Guy Morrison on this board has a large bolt face long MRC LH SS action for sale. Both calibers you mentioned are great hunting calibers, I still own a 358 Norma, sold my 358 STA a little while back (someone wanted it more then me). Another option is the 360 Imperial (essentially a 358 RUM), which fits the action well and will hammer anything on the planet into the ground. The 35's make great hunting cals, much better killers then the smaller rounds. FWIW - dan

Dan, what would you say the recoil comparison was/is between the 2 .358's?
As well as ballistically, is the STA quite a bit better?

I have several 358's. The best one is the 35-404imp.(360 imperial sort of) as far as ballistics go. The 358 STA gives up about 150fs. to the 404 and the norma 150 to the STA. I carry the STA when hunting moose/elk etc. as it's lighter(7 lb.) and recoil is not a factor for standing shots.Off the bench the heavier rifles are nicer to shoot. I think the 35 cal. is the best of all worlds, long bullets at good vel. makes for a great hunting cart. and you can pop some gophers with pistol bullets. Good luck. Mark

As Mark stated, basically you'll get 2800 fps with 250 gr bullets with the 358 Norma, 2950 or so out of the STA, and 3000-3100 out of the Imperial/RUM/404 Jeff triplets. The STA shoves you back a fair bit better then the Norma, I don't find either too objectionable. The others are starting to get right on my recoil tolerance level. Build them in a slightly heavier rifle (10 pounds all up is nice), use a limbsaver pad, scope them with something with lots of eye relief, and away you go. FWIW - dan

I like the sound of a 358RUM, always though that should have been a factory round. Far more powerful than necessary for all but the biggest bitey/squishy african stuff.

Add a mercury recoil suppressor or two in the stock and removable barrel brake - it ought to be a (loud) pussycat for range shooting. Remove the mercury and brake for hunting conditions
