New rifle shooting WAY left. Help!

I used a magnetic and optical boresighter and tried pulling the bolt and bore sighted the old fashion way. It shoots about 12 inches left both ways at 25 yards. When I turn windage all the way to the right it shoots 4 inches left of the target center still. This is the second scope I tried and second set of Weaver rings (extended). Are the scope mount holes drilled crooked? Is the barrel bent? Thanks.

Two piece bases can be moved considerably within the screw holes...

...drive the REAR base to the right and the FRONT base to the left and mount the rings and try it again.

What make of rifle?

i had a rifle that was like that

i took the front ring off and reversed it, and it fixed it, i previously shimmed it and when i spun it thats all it needed.

I have used this technique too but this make not be very kind to your scope tube.

If reversing rings can shift POI alot, the bores are not aligned very well. Yes, you can tighten things up and get the scope heading in the right - kind of but the scope tube will like get bent to fit.

Remember those ring marks? Well machined rings or those with inserts don't leave marks. Rings are out of alignment do.

If you find it is not your scope rings, your barrel is FUBAR'd. Same thing happened to me except I was shooting to the right, turned out to be off over 8 FEET at 100yds. Got a new barrel on and fixed the problem. If it is a brand new rifle, email/phone customer service and complain and a new barrel should be on its way.

BUT, before writing displeased letters, try all the simple things first, rings, scope, bases. Look down the rifle from the top and see if you can see the scope pointing to the right in your case.

I had that problem on my 700 until I realized the scope rings had screws on both sides. I tightened the rings on opposite sides completely destroying any chance to hit anything. Luckily for me, there were many people around to spot my mistake (LOL) for me. I know it sounds stupid, but worth a look before you send the barrel back. Have you tried different rings?

If the base solution doesn't work, Burris Sig rings w/inserts and you can center the windage and/or shim your scope elevation.

Simple solution for a common problem

The base solution didn't work. Do you know if the Leopold windage mount has enough range or does the Burris solution you mentioned provide more. Also, can you get the Burris signature rings in extension versions?

I had the base solution reversed... it would have made it shoot farther to the left.. I have corrected that slip...

FWIW, the Leupold rear base has a fair bit of windage adjustment.

You need to watch those bases carefully that they don't come loose over time though, or use some Blue (NOT RED) Loctite on them once you get 'em dialed in.

I stopped buying weaver style bases years ago, in fact you could still buy redfield bases back then. Leupold bases are the way to go. Problem solved and your scope tube will stay round and straight.

My Savage 10 FCP had this problem.. My nightforce had enough adjustment to take it into acct.. But when I installed my new Shilen barrel the scope is now in the middle of it's adjustment range..

So it may be the barrel..

There is a base that is available made by Holland down in Oregon I think. It is a standard 1913 type base, but is adjustable for right/left adjustment specifically to correct the problem you are talking about.

I think the fellow who designed it is Darryl Holland near Powers, Oregon, USA, a couple of hours south of Portland (where the libertards live).

Can I use a one piece Leopold base with extension rings? My rifle is a Savage Model 12 VLP.

If you want to stay with weaver style bases you can use something like Millet angle lock rings, they are windage adjustable and not to pricey.

Eye relief is an issue that necessitates extended weaver bases. I also had bolt clearance issues with Leopold bases. I had my dealer order Millet angle lock extension rings like you suggested and hope that the problem will be solved. Thanks a bunch everyone.

Ask around and see if any of your friends have a set of tools for lapping rings. Alot of the tool kits come with a set of inserts to assure the ring alignment before honing.
