Hey guys I made a post a while ago asking for help in buying my first rifle and after going throught the training course I will get my licence within a month or so.

I have decided to buy this.

My reason for this thread however is to ask you guys what ammunition to use and what targets I can use.

I already plan on shooting certain old books such as highschool year books because who wants to remember highschool anyways lol.

I have heard of a type of bullet that will split into parts upon impact. Does anyone know if a hard cover book about an inch thick would be enough to cause the bullet to split and make a big impact on the book?

I watched a video of a .22 rimfire destroying a block of ice and that wasnt even with the type of round that splits apart.

With all that said what I want to hear about is how to have the most fun with my gun when I get it (while puting safety first of course).

So share all your stories about your first time shooting.

you can purchase a spinner or resetable for a moderate price.fired 12ga hulls are one of my favorites along with clay piegons.glue paint balls to a sheet of cardboard or glue bottle caps to coffee stir sticks.also tincans ,plastic pop bottles.hope this is of some help.

I believe the ammo you are referring to is the CCI Quick Shock. It is a segmented hollow point that shoots 1600 fps+. Very similar to the Stingers. I found that when the bullet impacts anything hard, it just upsets into its three lobes and the "Splatter" factor isn't what you thnk it is. I have had best results with Winchester Power Points. Massive hollow point and they actually mushroom like a big game bullet going from 22 cal up to 44 cal. Much better splat factor.

As for targets.......the skys the limit. I raid my kids halloween bag for all the suckers. They're great targets. push them into some styrofoam and set them at whatever distance you want. Resettable spinners are great too. A dueling tree perhaps. Clay pigeons are okay, but I find that the bullets usually pass right through without shattering them.

6BR dot com has a great set of rimfire Tactical Match Targets that are free to download. Very challenging if thats your game.

Make sure to try many kinds of ammo for your .22 to see which one it likes.

Great choice for a rifle, the Savages are a great value and shoot very well. Make sure you put decent glass on it and you will be set for many years. As Barks mentions, you will need to try a number of brands of ammo to find what your rifle likes. Most rimfires show a strong preference for one or two brands of ammo. My Mossberg 140K shoots Dynapoint GT's easily under an inch at 50yds, but can't stay under 3" with Federal 525pack ammo. My Ruger 22/45 prefers the Federal 525's to the Dynapoints. You just need to try a range and see what works for you.

For targets, a lot of great choices have been mentioned. I have printed off the targets used for the rimfire postal matches, stickied at the top of this forum. Print one copy of each, then take them to a copy shop and have a pile made for cheap. They work well for a lot of ranges and uses. The 20yd 3 position match is also a great practice tool to keep your offhand and position shooting skills sharp.

Oh yeah, the 6BR.com site mentioned above should be 6mmBR.com.

Years down the road , your going to wish you didn't shoot up your yearbook.
The good ol' tin can has been one of the best .22 targets for generations . You wanna see "splat" ? , just add water.
.22 ammo is cheap , go with the other suggestions and try different types of ammo and practice keeping those groups tight.
If your going to hunt rabbit , "Splat-factor" pills are gonna make field dressing a PITA.

Keep the year books! water bottles filled with coloured water or blocks of ice are fun targets. Learn to shoot for tight groups first though. More fun when u shoot well & call your shots.

That's a fine looking rifle, decent price too. Look's like you've made a good choice. As for targets, I enjoy spinners - spoiled fruit is fun too.

Don't shoot old yearbooks, people will think you're practicing for a school massacre. Shoot old Playboys, it's OK because Hugh Hefner shoots at the Playboy mansion everyday.

Plastic water/pop/beer bottles are good targets. For extra fun/challenge, lay them on the side, and use the opening as a target. Try to shoot through the opening. Tin cans are fun, cheap, and it's nice to see the cans afterward, with all those holes in them. Yearbooks? Tempting, but you might regret it. Also, I think shooting at yearbooks might get some odd looks. Sort of the same looks you'd get if you'd shoot a picture of someone(don't). If you want to get rid of some high school anguish, shoot old essays, tests, etc. The first time I took a girl to the range, she was pissed because she got a bad mark on one of her university essays. She quickly made swiss cheese of it. She still keeps that essay. One odd target I've seen my uncle shoot at are those cubes or sticks of snack cheese. Fruit is fun, especially citrus. Best target I have is simply a few metal lids on a string. Cheap, reactive, fun and challenging to shoot when they start moving.
And be sure to clean up your targets afterwards, please.

I made my own target out of a real estate sign left at my house. Works good.

Used shotshell hulls, eggs on golf tee's. golf balls on or off tee is fun too. the eggs go splat pretty good the golf balls will go flyin. if you have a range or area where u can chase the ball around at different ranges, etc....good fun.....also as already mentioned the old tin can........if you get some cheap really fizzy stuff and keep the soda in the can sealed up, shake it up real good, then shoot....can of shaving cream works the same. dont be too close though, kinda messy........once you good try your 22 brass, and then on end or old rifle/pistol brass, try to hit the primer (old and already fired of course).....ALSO, go digging in the old toy bin in the basement, or the dollar store. Those little green army men toys are kinda fun.
