welli decided i will be buying a new rifle this fall after hearing all the usual this one and that debates i decided on the stevens 200.
so i went to lebarons to check it out to get a feel for it and well i like how it feels in my hands mmmmmmmmmm anyway
now i have a dilema do i go with the 30/06 or the 300 win mag both are plentifull in variety unlike my current .303 lol and given that this will be my big game gun *read bear deer and most likely moose* as well as the ocasional something to play with at the range gun i am torn on which one to get

The Stevens is a great gun for the money, and can't be beat for value and accuracy right out of the box. If it were my choice, I would pick the 30-06 hands down; the rifle is just too darned light for a .300 Mag, and unless you like to get the stuffing knocked out of you every time you shoot, go for the '06. There's not much a .300 can do that a 30-06 can't. Besides, the '06 is cheaper to shoot, cheaper on powder, etc.

If you do decide to go for the .300, then it would be a good idea to get a better recoil pad or fill the stock like Powderburner said; otherwise OUCH!:runaway:

The 30-06 isn't really a huge step up from the 303 you already have (flame on). Of those two, I'd get the 300WM. I just bought a new Savage about a month ago and went with 7mmRM. The guys above are serious about the recoil pad, though it MAY be adequate on a 30-06.

What?!? have you fired a Stevens before? 6.5lbs and a hockey-puck pad.

I'd go 308, and even then I'd consider a wuss-pad.

You're joking, right? I love the Stevens - I have 2 - but that nasty-ass stock is the one thing I really dis-like about it. Of course, it is improvable. An hour with a razorblade and some sandpaper helps - get rid of the mould lines.

well as for the thump i would be putting a decelerator on it and i can take a decent whallop LOL.
yes i quite like the plastic stock but as prosper said it needs some end-user customizing much the same as my .303 did when i got it. it will be shaved and trimed to fit me and then camo dipped in Mossy Oak new break up
i have been leaning to the 300 win mag mainly due to the fact that this will probebly be my go to gun for ALL large game and i will be planning on some more extreme hunts in the free lands of canada *west of manitoba* and figure that the 300 will offer better advantages for more open terrain. if it was going to be my only hunting in the dense bush of ontario gun then i might go for the more gentler calibers.
 
I "had" one in 300 win mag, make sure your fillings are tight, its no fun at the range....

The pad will have to be replaced....
 
yeah i was acttuly looking at that, but i will be buying new that way i can "tinker with it and work all the bugs out my self LOL dont like having someone else having doen it LOL

It's no lighter than my T3 .300WM, @ 6 3/8 lbs :eek:

Although I do prefer the T3 .308 on the bench :)
 
I had a new 700 Stainless SPS come to the door today in 270 (WIN, not WSM!!). :D

WS sells them for $599 and $499 for the blued jobs. I think that's the best deal out there. Instead of selling later to upgrade, there's tons of stuff you can add to a 700.

Get it accurized, bedded into a McMillan with a good scope and a set of Tallys and you've almost got a custom gun. Plus the factory stock comes with a way better recoil pad. Try that with a Stevens! :runaway:

I don't get it? You saying that you can't accurize a Stevens, or put it into a McMillan, or put a good scope & rings on it?

I'm not sure if you can get a McMillan for a Stevens or not. :confused:

Either way, I'm saying that down the road, I'd rather dump coin into a 700 than a Stevens. Seems to me it would be money better spent. I guess it boils down to personal preference.

Fixin up a Stevens would be like building a nice house on a crummy lot. :D :dancingbanana: :D :dancingbanana: :D
