Hey guys~just picked-up one of these rifles from Epps. and really enjoying it so far. Only issue I'd like to address has to do with how close the objective end of the scope is to the barrel. I'm using Millett rings on this Millet TRS-1 scope for now. Bases are Burris XTB steel.

I first started with the Millett medium height, but they left the objective approx. 3/8" off the barrel. Too far for my liking. Switched to the Millett low ones, and the objective comes withing 1/32" of the barrel. That would be perfect if I didn't want to use scope caps, but that isn't the case. To even FIT a cap on, I have to use the sun shade (tapered barrel, so a little more clearance at the end) and even then...I've had to basically sand a flat spot on the bottom of the cap.

Question is this~the Millett scope I like, their caps are garbage. I want to switch to Butler Creek ones, but not until I know I'll have the necessary clearance. I'd like to stick to a 2-pc. base, and I like the Burris ones I have...so that would mean rings. Would you replace the rings, or the base...and what would you switch to?

Thanks for taking a moment to respond, I appreciate the help!

Rob

If those millet caps fit, I can't see why the BC ones wouldn't?

The caps you have on there look like they have some pretty thick rubber.

Why?

I could see if you loaded it from the top, but I can't see a one piece base getting in the way, anymore than the giant turrets on that scope. LOL

Regardless I would just go to a one piece base, possibly a 20 moa if you are gonna start putting that set up to the test. ;)

But then you might have to change both. LOL

Well, the Millett ones don't really fit/work well. The rear one~the cap doesn't flip out of the way, touches your face/jams on the brim of my hat etc. The spring is weak. The front one, even altered, is really squeezed too tight between the barrel and sunshade and I'm not crazy about the extra scope length I'm forced to have if I want a front cap. AND, these caps take too much effort to open.

I've given this some thought. :) Believe me, I'm a cheap guy. I didn't want to buy BC caps unless 100% necessary and right now..I think they're 99% necessary.

Anyhow, I need about 1/8" more clearance...whatever that translates to in MOA where rails are concerned. I'm thinking I'd like to achieve it with rings though.

OK, that's good advice. When the sun shade is off though, the objective is ALMOST touching the barrel. I'm pretty sure you could slip a playing card in there, that's about it. I have BC caps on 2 other rifles, but both are 44mm or smaller, so I can't test them.

Still curious~are there 30mm rings between low and medium height? Until I bought this rifle, I'd never had a reason to consider higher bases, but how much higher would 10MOA/20MOA bases likely be than the Burris XTB?

I have an EGW 20 MOA base on mine and (I think) Millet rings. I can't recall if they are mediums or low

Scope is a Falcon Menace, 30mm tube. The OD of the objective is 64mm, with BC Caps it is 67mm. So the caps are about 1.5mm thick

The bottom of the scope tube sits about 0.71 inches above the top of the action, as close as I can measure. The base is about 0.30 in to the bottom of the notches, 0.42 to the top of the notches

You can see from the pics that the EGW base is scalloped above the receiver/magazine. I have no problem inserting rounds in the mag or chamber from here with 223.

Rob, where is your 100 zero in respect to the center of the scope travel? If you do not have enough to get to long range a one piece tapered base might be the answer. They are usually taller than your existing base but slope down towards the barrel. It might be perfect in your situation. Either way I would use a one piece base for extra height, as shown in Bolivar's post above.

Thanks for the pics Bolivar~the Millett has a 50mm objective, and my Millett rings are the same height as yours~low. Looks like a 20MOA base would be too high for my rifle.

PEI ROB~good question, I'll have to look...can't remember. :)

The objective of my scope is 56mm, giving the OD I quoted. What is the specific distance you want to scope to be above the barrel?

How high does your scope sit above the action now? Is much less than 0.71? The difference in this dimension between your and mine would be roughly the distance your objective bell would clear your barrel.

Better to be too high than to low IMO. You can always add a cheek riser to get better eye alignment for a taller scope installation.
