New Ruger SR9 - first time out on a range

as for the trigger, its not super awesome right out of the box, but it can be made quite a bit better with just some patience and elbow grease.

remove mag disconnect and polish all the trigger bar contact points. this is what everyone tells you. I went a bit further.

I looked at all the parts that move when the trigger is pulled and tried to make those areas smoother. I did a little bit on the part that the little safety "trigger" moves and was able to get rid of some grit there. I also worked around and in the striker channel. I polished any casting flash off the striker, and worked the "mouth" of the striker channel where it rubs the striker spring. this area was quite gritty previously and contributed to at least 90% of the gritty feel on the trigger. The rearward most part(opening) of the striker channel(bore?) was a harsh transition and would catch the striker spring on each and every coil as it went in and out, and you could feel it easily. I slowly and carefully "ported" that hole so it was a smooth trumpet bell shape with a very small jewelry file. very fine. it took quite a while. I then rapidly moved the spring back and forth in the hole, all around it. This took the last of the file marks off the metal. I just kept going with the file until I couldn't get the spring to catch on the bore at all.

These things make the trigger much more smooth. Not much weight off it I wouldn't say, but its much nicer to shoot.

I've had a SR9 for a while and although I haven't shot it as much as I'd like, I really like it. I've been toying with putting in an order for the new SR45, too.

I read somewhere where a guy cut a coil or so off of the trigger disconnect spring (at least i think that was the spring, don't quote me on it ) and he said it did wonders for lightening the trigger pull, memory serves whatever spring it was he ordered a spare. Whichever spring it was he said if too much was cut off the striker wouldn't hit hard enough to ignite the primer, if that narrows down what it was.

Anyway the SR9 is 1000% my next purchase. Just gotta make sure it's one that has the D shaped mag release.

Bah. I have an early model with the round release and it works as well as any. Being left handed, I liked the fact that the SR9 is fully ambi out of the box, which swayed me over the Glock and M&P. Couldn't be happier with my SR9.

its the striker spring, but don't cut it. yes you will have a lighter pull, but you may get some light primer strikes, causing ftf. that striker spring is what propels the striker forward to hit the primer.

Hey I just got one too!! Love it so far. Out to shoot it tomorrow.

I've already done a detail strip with a minor polish on some parts. Removed the mag disconnect.

I hope it shoots as good as it looks!

I have a line on SR9 parts, (ghost trigger reset bars, polished trigger parts, springs, op rods, metal striker indicators etc), and they ship to Canada for fairly cheaply. Its called Galloway precision.

If anyone local(lower mainland/Fraser valley) finds a real good deal on 9mm fmj/tmj, let me in on it pls.

Thanx for the info on mags.

Anyone know about holsters?

Sorry to hijack, I just thought it was cool that more guys were into the SR9.
I just picked up an Uncle Mikes size 15 RH for it. It is the only holster I have found for it so far in stock anywhere (Wholesale).
I had mine out to the range for the first time yesterday and was not overly impressed. I tried different ammo and it was a jammomatic with everything I put in it. 2 FTE's every single mag. Any Idea's?

the only time mine did it(two in close succession) was when I was trying to relax in the name of accuracy. I relaxed too much and limp wristed it a bit. with the 115gr ammo not having the juice to cycle the action fully, it failed to eject. Tightened up the grip and put a bit more starch in my elbow joints and it was fine fine fine!

As for holster, I picked up a barely used Comp-Tac Gladiator Minotaur. Its a Kydex adjustable modern pistol holster that is made for the SR9 and it has a nice leather backing so its comfortable. it also has adjustable snap attached belt loops. this way you don't have to take your belt off to de holster. its nice. http://www.comp-tac.com/product_info.php?products_id=101&osCsid=mol4limntmavduq3pliu0sp7o2

ANNNNNND!! its in a movie now!!

Warm Bodies, its the sidearm of the leading lady. Whacks some bad guys too. Mentioned by John Malkovitch

Just saw that movie tonight and had to chuckle when Malkovitch says, "The Ruger SR?". Always makes me smile when watching a movie and I say to myself, I've got that gun!

yea its really good! Definately not a regular zombie movie. Some of that for sure, but its PG13. Its very original and well done. Just go in with an open mind. not standard Hollywood fare really.

they need to redo the SR22 and make it a look alike of the SR9/40/45, not that wierdo toy looking thing they have now, and make it in Canadian barrell lenght.

I'd love a gun that was identical to mine but in .22lr

My wife's Blade-Tech holster and mags pouches arrived today from "Packing In Pink". This is neon bright pink to where you wanna wear sun glasses to look at it!

She spent the afternoon wandering around the house drawing her SR9, taking a sight picture, saying "Pow! Pow! and changing mags. I've created a monster in pink ....

She is soooo looking forward to her Black Badge course.
