I just got my brand new deer rifle today. Its a Savage 111 combo in .270 win. I got it for 429.99 for cabelas canada. This is my second .270, I recently sold my 710 to buy it. I really like the ability to shoot anything with one gun. Coyotes to bears, Im covered.

My question is about the scope, everyone says they're crap but if I shoot 100 rounds a year from this Simmons will it last long? What problems have you had with the scope? (does it lose zero? stop adjusting?) If I sight it in this weekend will it hold till after deer season (November)?

I also have a Bushnell,(from my 710). It looks like its to short between the objective bell and the power ring to span the scope rings and mounts( Is it possible?)

I have been looking at a Banner 4-12 at wal mart and a Bushnell Sportsman 3-9 at Can Tire. Any thoughts on these scope?

Thanks for any advice

You should be ok with the simmons for awhile. Don't bother w/ the sportsman, no experience w/ banner line but I'd just use it as is and pick up a trophy/legend/elite 3200 later on as money permits.

If you have the same luck with it as a buddy of mine, at that rate you should make it 3 months or so. Save your pennies and get yourself a middle of the road bushnell, leupold or better, new rings couldn't hurt either.

You still got a good deal, you just got a 22 scope on a 270.

A 3200 or a Leupold Rifleman in some talley mounts would be perfect :) .

That Savage puts you miles ahead of your old Model 710...trust me I owned one for 2 weeks, then took it back and got the exact same gun as yours  , served me well for 3 seasons before my gun whoring syndrome told my thinkin brain i needed more/flashier boom sticks.

The Simmons on my 300 mag Savage 111 package has held zero just fine. Granted I dont use it a whole lot, but it has still seen about 200 rounds of factory loads and the 300 mag recoil hasn't put the scope out yet.

It seems like you are on quite a budget owning a 710 then upgrading to a FXCP111 and also the fact that you are looking at lower end scopes for a replacement. I think a Bushnell Trophy or Legend will be the best quality scope in your budget range and you will be happy with the upgrade. I even just have a Trophy on a .270 and looking through the Simmons then the Trophy I notice a big difference in clarity.

If you are using Weaver type rings you can get a base that extends back a bit over the action and has a cross slot about 3/4" back from the standard base. This will allow you to position your scope back closer to your eye.

The Banner line of scopes are ok, not great optics but solid and serviceable at a good price. I haven't seen one that failed.

The Simmons on my Savage 111 7mm never lost zero, but it would fog up real easy out in the bush...that was my only problem with it so after a couple of seasons I upgraded to a Leupold.

Check out the Cabela's Pine Ridge brand. They're far better than anything at crappy tire or walmart at a competitive price. No issues with mine, 200 rds on it.
