New Shilen Action - Stiller Involved??

Didn't want to hi-jack Jerry's thread so figured I should start my own. Thinking of ordering an action from the first batch and have been in contact with Shilen regarding this, if anyone wants info on it pm me. I also got some info from another site regarding the actions:

  • The action was discussed in a earlier thread back in March, think it was. The action - well let's say Stiller has something to do with it. I saw one of the first of these (serial #3) back in Dec. Some at Shilen have been using one of these to hunt with most of last fall/winter...put some deer on the table for sure. At the swap meet in March they a few actions and complete rifles to look at (read drool over). The action is made to accept a Savage barrel thread (you could take a factory barrel and use it) so yes the barrel nut is a Savage nut. The remainder of the action is made Remington 700 - so you get to use all the stocks available for a Remington, plus you can use a Shilen/Jewel/etc trigger. I have only fired a Jewel once, but have to say the Shilen trigger is not bad.
  • You can imagine seeing this action setting in a shop that makes barrels....the possibilities were endless
  • oh, and the price not sure about a complete rifle, the action was mentioned to run $1100 (actually 950 USD)
 
Well it sure is a looker. Its very interesting that a company known for world class barrels is willing to bet the farm on an action VERY similar to savage. They even decided to thread it the same. They are also offering a shouldered version with no nut in a complete rifle. It seems Shilen is validating what some shooters have known all along.

Definately looks like a Stiller - we've got loads go through the shop every week and
virtually every detail of the action itself I can see in the pics looks like a Predator or Tac 30.

I've noticed the same thing for a lot of other "manufacturers" in the U.S., at least 5-6
companies "make" their own actions which look suspiciously like variants of the current offerings from Glen Harrison at Defiance (formerly of Nesika)

Kind of strikes me as odd with what a large manufacturing base they have down south that they still only have a handful of companies making actions yet many more claiming they are doing so while having them farmed out to the former.

It can't be all that hard, after all I managed to figure it out, lol.

The US no longer has a large manf base. They shipped that overseas a decade ago.

Just look at the AR world. More bits and pieces than you can count yet, very few primary manf. Lots of brands and rebranding but how much is really "made in the USA"?

Take at look at the Brownells website and they make an effort to put USA stamp on any product that qualifies. You would expect to see pretty much all AR stuff to have this stamp. The results will surprise you...

The fact custom actions has taken this route too most certainly does not surprise me.

How much metal can one industrial CNC machine spit out in a work week?

I would expect the custom action consumption in the US is in the few thousands. For some brands, few hundreds.

If every company had their own machine, that would be one heck of a lot of wasted capacity.

This Chinese Computer manf has been in the news due to suicides of some workers. They pretty much make ALL the smart devices we consume from all the varied brands on the market.

How many companies make ALL the big screen TVs?

Economies of scale.... It works wonderfully and as long as the producer does not directly compete with 'brands', all is good in the world.

JV, the world it be a changing.

I love hearing all the howls of protest when NF first came on the scene. The Leuppy shooters just wouldnt accept that brand.

Now a Decade later, where is Leuppy and where is NF?

Shooting is a very conservative bunch but paradigms do and will change.

Ultimately, as more product is put on the line and more shooters do well, trends will change.

3 yrs ago, Savage and Bisley World Champion would have been heresy if not laughable.

It's a different world today.
