Hello, I recently purchased my first rifle, a Remington 700 5R Milspec. At the moment i have my Leupold 3-9x50mm on it and was looking at upgrading the optics. I have been doing some research into this category. The Vortex Viper 6-24x50mm seems like a rather good choice and was just wondering if anyone has any feedback on these scopes or any other competitive options.

Cheers, Monk.

how much is your budget? the 5r is a very good out of the box rifle, and with tuned handlaods are 1/2moa or better guns. so IMO they deserve good optics if you plan to keep it around, i cant comment on the Viper as have no experiance with them, but knowing your budget will allow us to give you other options

I have the Viper 6.5-20 x 50mm on my Sendero 300 WM, for the price I can't complain at all!! Its clear, has held a good zero, the turrets are great, and the zoom/parallax adjust smoothly. For a bill of less than 600 I'd highly recommend it. I haven't taken it out to do any long range shooting yet, but out to 200 its done its job. Hopefully going to see what it can do out to 600+ over Christmas holidays.

you may get better shooting results spending the money on ammo or reloading as the scope is probably not the bottleneck to your improvement.

worst advice ever.... OK so he spends his extra money on ammo instead of good glass, few months from now the scope is the weak point and hes stuck buying another scope... if he spends 100 or 4500 on a scope, hes still gonna be buying ammo to shoot the rifle. why waste the money later down the road havng to buy another scope? besides, if he decides precission isnt for him, a good scope will be an easier sell with less lost $ then trying to part with a peice of junk

I find a lot of new shooters aren't always ready to hear what good optics can cost. My advise as mentioned earlier is to spend as much as you can afford on glass. If you're going to spend any amount of time behind the rifle, you will soon see the advantage of good glass.
Try to look through a variety of scopes from low end to high end and you will see the difference not only in the optical quality, but the reticles as well. Cheaper scopes often have big fat lined reticles. The upside is the good quality scopes will last a lifetime if looked after and can be transferred to any rifle.
As far as your inquiry to the Vortex, I have heard good feedback, but have not spent any time wih one. Sightron would be another good option in the 1K price range. If you can squeeze $1800, a NF 3.5-15 would be perfect...

I was hoping to be around 1k for the scope, might be able to go with something a little higher depending on how long I wait. I am already set up.gif reloading as I have a rockchucker set from prophet.

I've never looked down a nightforce scope, but I have heard they are worth it.
Any suggestions for mounting hardware?

Cheers,Monk.

for around 1000, i would be looking into the Sightron line up, many people say the glass is comparable to NF but at 1/2 the cost. once again i have no experiance with them. If you contact Jerry, (mysticprecission) im sure he would be happy to give you all the information you can handle on them as he is a dealer of them.

as far as mounting, any thing of good quality, NF, near, ATRS, and other all make quality rings and rails. for a little more budget friendly EGW makes aforadable rails that IMO are good product for the money, im running one on my bush beater 5r and havnt had any problems with it

Ask yourself what type of shooting you plan on doing known distance Tgt ie fclass or unknown distance tactical/practical. This will help you decide what features you want in a scope ie type of reticle and turrets then pick your price 1000 or less tactical/practical I would go with a vortex viper pst with mrad reticle (turrets match the reticle which is very nice. Known distance target I would go with the sightron.

ive gor a sightron 10power 42 mm with a modified mildot and i love it ithink it was 700 -800 it looks great on my 5r308.i can shoot spray paint cans no prob all day @300 mtrs

When I wanted to buy my first nice scope I chose a Vortex Viper PST 6-24. It is a nice scope, the glass seemed clear and the tracking seems to be true. I also really like the zero stop they have. After that I picked up 2 Sightron SIII scopes. A 8-32x56 and a 6-24x50. After looking threw the Sightrons the glass in the Vortex all the sudden got a little foggy.

I do think that the Viper PST is a good deal at $840 (SFP) but for the glass it is nice to step up to the Sightron SIII scopes, around $1000.

I also have a Viper 6.5-20x50. It is a nice scope as well for around $500. The glass is alright and the tracking is ok. It always comes back to the zero but the tracking isn’t true. So if you dial in +30 MOA you may only end up with 25. Once you have the tracking figured out then the settings are repeatable. (This is with my scope. Others may be different)

You get what you pay for. I think I will try a Nightforce next.

Personally i have seen two Vortex scopes Sh*t the bed in one week. One was a PST 4-16x50, the other a hunting model. Both had issues with retaining Zero. I have one on my 5R, it is a nice scope, but seening two crap the bed in such short order means i will not purchase another one. If the one i own craps the bed, i will buy Leupold or similar.

You have a very fine scope on that gun now. It may not have the magnification, but it is a well made scope when it comes to scope quality you get what you pay for- plain and simple. Are Nightforce worth it?, well if you want better than Sightorn and Vortex, yes they are!

Weird?? I was shooting .6 MOA groups with a bushy 10x, swapped out for a NF recently, what do you know, .6 MOA

Exactly!! A piece of good glass is universal. No matter what platform you end up with, having one great scope will allow you to do alot. Do not buy a really great rifle like the 5R and hobble it with piss poor glass. You will just be purchasing again. You can always sell quality, piss poor quality or just fit for purpose - not so much.
