hey im new to the board and new to hunting, I have just purchase two new rifles a t3 7mm mag and a t3 .338 both synthetic and stainless and both with 9x30 ziess scopes. i find both guns beatiful to shoot but I'm goin hunting this weekend on a private ranch for wolves and I would really like to keep the pelts. I was considering a .243 or a .223 I would like to use this new rifle for small game like coyotes and wolves, would the .243 with a lighter load be my best choice thanks for the help

i would pick .223 or a .22-250 if you're keeping the pelts, what kind of rifle are you planing on getting

not sure on brand of rifle yet I'm open to suggestions would like something that can shoot longer distances.........there is so many variable i can see why a guy needs more than one gun lol

Since you're happy with the Tikka's, another one with the same scope chambered in a .22 centrefire or .243 will do nicely. Not exactly inexpensive though.
Use ammo loaded with commercial FMJ bullets. These are not military ball. Commercial FMJ's are made for hide hunting. Light varmint bullets are made to expand rapidly upon impact and will blow big holes in the hides.
With either, you'll have to consider the rifling twist too. A fast twist(1 in 9) is needed for heavy bullets in both. 60 grains and up in the .22. 85 grains and up for the .243.
You may not have time to find a rifle, the ammo and sight it in by the weekend though. If you're not reloading, you'll have to try a box of as many brands and bullet weights of ammo to find the one or two your rifle will shoot well. If you are reloading, you'll have to work up the load for the rifle before you go hunting anything.
