New Shooters To Sporting Clays Observations

Sporting clay is expensive. I didn't shoot it as much when I had a mortgage. But most clubs try to keep it as cheap as they can. $30,,, to $ 40 per hundred. Competitions run a little more.
If clubs want people to join and pay a membership and come out early to set up the course. they should treat them with little respect. It is easy to become tired of the arguments, attuite and back stabbing, and these from people that never help out. The last club I joined gave you $5 off your targets if you were a member. then they scraped that ,and told us you pay the same that everyone pays. So I saved my member ship fees and that pays for 6 shoots a year.
If you can fins a club close by that treats people with respect, by all means join. It has been a observation of mine that most clubs that have sporting clay and trap tend to have constant issues about range time a resources. Cost of targets are about $ 17 bucks a shooter. clubs that charge $50 are just greedy. I have seen it happen. Clubs raise prices and shooter turnout drops. They end up with less revue any way

I enjoy all of the clays games, but I am also a hunter, and no clays game as closely resembles actual hunting situations as sporting clays. When hunting waterfowl over decoys for example, the birds are generally coming towards you and losing altitude, and you don't get that in trap or skeet.

That is absolutely true and I've shot sporting clays several times. I've also shot 5-stand. If we had one at our club I'd shoot it instead of skeet. I love 5 stand!! I like shooting them all but sporting clays for me just has a "golfing" element or feel to it and as I said before I am not into golf. And there is also the fact I can shoot twice as many or more skeet and trap targets for the same price and thats just practice rounds. I can shoot registered trap or skeet targets cheaper than a round of practice sporting clays. Sporting is expensive.

It does cost more, which is why I shoot sporting clays once per week, out of my four days of clay sports

Jumping in on this thread since it is about beginners. We've been shooting "redneck" clays up here in the woods north of Hinton with a buddies thrower and our shorter, more aggressive 12's.

Seriously enjoying this, and living in NW Calgary, thinking about tossing a few shorter tacticool bush guns into the EE and getting a nicer O/U and a thrower, also maybe trying to join Silver Willow, since we also have a cabin near Sundre.

I've NEVER shot on a trap course of any kind other than bring your own clays and shells to crown land or a farm yard.

What kind of numbers of clays should I expect to shoot in a trip out there, on average? Trying to justify the cost of 2 range memberships haha, indoor pistol and trap.

Most people shoot 75 to 150 clays per visit. It depends on the person, and the club.
