I just received my new Mossberg 500 combo shotgun today; it's perfect for me. I wanted a shotgun with a fixed choke on the sporter barrel, as I feel that I would become confused as to what my pattern was going to do with a multiple choke system, and I wanted a short barrel to pack for bears in the summer (all that I have to do is mount the front swivel on the barrel when it gets here).
I handled my buddies 870 about a week ago, and I found the controls counter-intuitive. when I first held this shotgun I knew where the controls where immediately (it probably helps that I've owned 2 other 500's). With the sporter barrel it weighs in at just under 6.5lbs, and the ventilated rib is very nice. I can't believe that Cabelas' is selling these shotguns for $250.00.

You Get What you Pay for....... 'Nuff Said

Yes, you do.

Unfortunately, usually what you've paid for is advertising, junk mail, telemarketing, salesman who butter up/outright bribe purchasing agents to take their product and give it market share, gun writers to give good reviews to products they get for free in the "package", and the "guerrilla marketers", who pose on webforums and such as loyal brand consumers and experts who talk trash about competing and downmarket brands.

Or the people that buy them because the marines got a contract for them or something...

" handled my buddies 870 about a week ago, and I found the controls counter-intuitive. when I first held this shotgun I knew where the controls where immediately (it probably helps that I've owned 2 other 500's). "

You might be a bit biased then... ;)

was thinking the same thing, if he owned two 870's and then the 500 he would probably prefer the 870

but that bein said, im glad you like your 500 because its what i plan to get

I guess that I could be accused of cheeping out; my rifles sure don't prove this though (My rimfire is a modified Sako Quad). Reality is that if it's good enough for the US military, then it will probably do me (or anyone else for that matter) just fine. P.S. I tend to recall that there was a military specification that required a shotgun to run for 30 000 rounds without cleaning; Mossberg passed, Remington didn't.
Before anyone "accuses" me of being anti Remington, I like the 870, and the 700, though I'm not a fan of their current production, or there current business decisions. Yes I am biased though, I like the 500 more than the 870; the controls are better placed, and the gun feels better in my hands. 500's very seldom return for repairs, so in my opinion if anyone has a problem with that, OH WEll!

military use the 590 dont they ? probbaly very similar

they are similar, only dif is the 590 holds more rounds and has a bayonet lug. the mp's use the 500 though. i love my mossy 500, got mine decked out with a 6 position collapsable stock, surefire tri rail picatinney forend, surefire g2 nitrolon and a duracoat combat green paint job:cool:

I'm going from memory here......

The reason Remington didn't pass the test was because they never submitted a shotgun for competition.

Military shotgun contracts are nothing compared to civilian/police sales.
Remington was selling oodles of them without trying.

Marketing types looked at the numbers and decided that it wasn't worth the Remington reputation given they were firmly rooted in police sales.

NOTE - I am a 870 user as I like the location of the safety and fit/feel of the gun. Also, there are less parts when disassembling for cleaning. Having said that - I will always take a firearm that goes "bang" every time instead of "click" - irrespective of who made it.

Do you really beleive that? Reality is that someone cooked a sweet government deal that made everyone involved some good coin with little regard to what was actually best. If Remington was part of the cook off, I am sure that Reminton would have passed the zillion shot test instead of Mossberg:D

10,000 rounds without a jam, missfeed, Fail to fire ( shotgun, if ammo fails thats ok ) or cleaning

and yeah, mossberg 590 passed

the Spas-12 passed also back in the day but kind of cheated, as when the semi function failed/jammed the user just switched to pump and carried on

Remington probably did not compete because they knew the buy off was in and besides as you say, they did not need it, to sell the world's best selling pump gun. Just like when many Canadian Police Forces went to glocks the RCMP went to smiths because of the historical relationship between Smith and Wesson and the mounties. Historical Relationship? :bigHug::dancingbanana: $$$$$$$$$$

As far as I know the US military use the 590A1 which is a standard 590 with thicker wall barrel, metal trigger guard and metal safety but I think recently they adapted the Benelli M4 semi-auto (they name it M1014) but not sure if they only supply them to special force or everyone.

i have seen pictures of the modified M4 , im also unsure if its taking the place of the 590. or if its in use by other services. the 590 is the standard shotgun for the Army, i believe the Marines use the 870 and the M1014. only reason i believe this is because i have seen images of marines in iraq toting these models .. i will see if i can track down the pictures

If any public company doesn't care about major military contracts, it finds itself without any shareholders. Remington regularly and aggressively seeks military contracts. And yes Remington did go through the test and the poof is the anti jam modifications that where implemented in (I believe) the 1980's.
Beyond that, I'm being treated like I'm anti-Remington, and it seems to me that it's happening simply because I bought a 500 over an 870. Now, who is calling me biased? FYI my main centerfire rifle is a Remington 700. I take part in these blogs for intelligent conversation, but as of now, I'm wondering if I've made a serious mistake. Anyone who is foolish enough to think "only the brand that I use works" isn't worth having a conversation with.

Please do not think that I am anti Mossberg. I am not. I just do not add much weight to the fact that it was chosen by the US military. I do not believe the test results. That was a military contract for gawd sake! Do you think that someone would tell you that some dude at Mossberg was tight with the vice pres? Even though I think that the 870 is superior because it has been proven by hunters in mud and snow and salt water hunting etc. and still is the number one pump gun sold. This is a consumer test and the results determined by units sold. In spite of the competition between mossberg and remington for the cheap market, this thread is not a "only the brand that I use or have used works thread". Yes I like the 870 and have owned many, but in spite of its popularity, I think there is much better out there. My top of the list goes to the Benelli Nova or Super Nova. The others are not even close. My opinion.

BTW, you do get what you pay for. That is why the Benelli cost more:D
