Hi all. New, unexperienced shotgunner in Vancouver. I have moderate experience with .22 rifles and some experience with medium centerfire (.303 British) and absolutely none with shotgun.

Anyways, now that I have a shotgun, I want to get familiar with hitting a target, get comfortable with my gun, and have some fun. The shotgun is... don't laugh... 12.5" barreled Dominion Arms Grizzly with screw-in modified choke and ghost ring sight. This is not a tacticool gun for me; it will be a working gun for remote wilderness once I'm mildly proficient. Yes, I know this barrel is a bit silly for sport. So be it. It's what I have and I'd like to try it in a sport context so if I dig the general sport scene then a proper shotgun could be forthcoming...

Would anyone care to recommend which of the lower mainland clubs/ranges might be best to greet a newbie with such a shotgun and tell/show/teach him what he needs to know?

Cheers.

Why silly? Will be loads of fun.

I know Ridgedale in Abbotsford has "Trap day" the first sunday of every month, im sure there would be guys willing to help out a newb.

Mike

You can have fun with any gun, but the 12.5" barrel is really meant to launch slugs and buckshot at two and four-legged critters in mind rather than birdshot at winged critters and clay targets.

Keep your eyes peeled for a 28" or 30" 870 barrel, assuming a direct fit to the griz (I wouldn't know)

try out poco, i shoot there and i my self just started trap shooting, i seen a guy up there the couple of weeks ago and he was using what looked like a shorty type gun, he was hitting them, the guys up there are pretty good at helping out newbies, lots of fun they run every other sunday, so the next one will be oct 26

ps-starts at noon

I have a friend with an 18.5" 870 and he's not allowed to use it at the Vancouver Gun club.

Try Poco or abbotsford for some clay shooting.

Poco sucks ass don't even bother with those morons.

You will NOT be able to shoot skeet there for a while, as ya gotta do the stupid ass new members course, then ya gotta go to the range FIVE times before you can take the super range users course so you can go on the shotgun ranges.

You can ONLY shoot slugs on Range #7. (Only range you can use if ya don't take range user course.)

Ridgedale is A+! Go there an you'll be well looked after, go to Poco an you'll be #### on.

Show up, pay a day pass and shoot> No membership reqd.

I am a former member of VGC in Richmond, Skeet, Trap and sporting clays. there are some very helpful guys there, and Sunday is by far the most relaxed, social day. they shoot all three on Sunday. No slug shooting when I was there as it is basically an old school trap club, but as younger shooters join, everyone gets a vote.

if you have an Attitude like that of our freind above dont come, but if you have a good attitude and want to have fun and play come up pay the day pass and shoot trap and skeet. and if you want to be a member theres alot more the club can offer.

there's lots of clubs around that offer trap and skeet, and most clubs have good members that will show you what you need to know or help you with questions.

poco is just one of them.

Vancouver gun club in Richmond is open on Saturdays and Sundays, it's great, and everyone there is friendly, you pay $10 for a day pass and it's 5 bucks a round. A round of trap is 25 shots.

Wow, sorry to hear about your PoCo experience. Is it just the rules you object to? Every club is going to have some rules like range orientation course(s). I guess PoCo requires two courses and Ridgedale only requires one. PoCo, on the other hand, doesn't limit the number of times you can bring a guest to shoot. That's important to me, as I'm trying to share the joy of shooting with as many friends (read: voters) as possible...

Anyways, since this thread was about shotgunning near Vancouver, PoCo gets the nod over Ridgedale for driving time also. I've used several of their ranges now and no morons, so far! :) Anyways, it's awesome to have a choice in the lower mainland.

Maybe give PoCo another chance... bring your shotgun (shot/slugs) or pistol to their Pumpkin Shoot on Nov 2nd!

Mission Rod and Gun

Come out to Mission sunday mornings around 10:00 am anything goes shorties no problem.

You can't even get a bench there, because of all the tards with 6-10 guns.

all the more reason to come durring the week, or at wed night for small bore night or be a member and have the range to your self for the first hour of opening, and even better get the range user course and have a lower range all to your self, including the 50yard range 3 with cement pads placed at diffrent distance's for your shooting enjoyment..

All ranges have something that someone is not going to like, thats why i looked around at diffrent ranges befor i became a member any where,
