New Sig Sauer Cross Magnum

Better off buying a Tikka and making it look like anything you want and it’ll be more accurate…

I have a deposit on one of these, but it's been awfully quiet on when they will deliver. In the meantime I've looked at exactly what you're talking about because I'm impatient.

The truth is, getting a stainless Tikka with a threaded muzzle in .300WM ($1,700) mounted into something of a similar weight and design like a MDT HNT26 chassis ($1950), and you're getting well into the high $3,000s. The Cross Magnum is $3850. Add a few more things like a compatible AICS magazine and decent muzzle device and you're basically spending the same money.

Not denying that the Tikka will probably be more accurate out of the box, but to try and build something with off the shelf parts that does the same thing isn't going to be that much cheaper.

I like mine so far in 308, I already have 4 308's and compete with one so I decided to keep my stuff the same..

I'm a huge fan of the platform. Have the 6.5 and the .308. Really like the idea of the 300WM in more or less the same livery.

I picked up the 308 version not long ago from a retailer. Was well under half the $4k mark. Why would the 300WM be double? I don't understand the $4k price tag.

Finally got mine out to the range along with his little brother in .308

Really pleased with the setup. I'm running a Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25 for glass on the .300WM Cross. I fired a number of handloads I had made up for my other .300WM; basically a 180gr Barnes TTSX with 67.7gr of H4350 (the COL escapes me). You can see below, out of the box, the accuracy isn't too shabby. I've had it out since these photos, and using the same load, but with a slightly longer COL, the groups are a bit tighter than the ones in the pics here. Either way, I'm very pleased with the accuracy from a dedicated hunting load coming from a fairly light barrel. Muzzle brake does a fantastic job taming the beast. Very pleasant to shoot. I put 50 rounds through it in the first session and wasn't regretting it at all. Ironically, the .308 Sig Cross (with the MDT Comp Brake) feels a tiny bit snappier if that makes any sense, although there is approximately a 3lb difference between the two and I'm running a very spicy 130gr TTSX load in the .308. The .300WM as setup now is approx 11lbs. Having said all of that, I see they now have a carbon fibre barrel version of this in .300 PRC. That would be a pretty compelling package if you're willing to lay out the scratch for it, although I had to wait nearly a year for this one and have a ton of .300WM cases etc, so I think I'm going to stick with it.

Love the Cross in 308, but wish they would have beefened up the bent sheet metal tab that holds the recoil pad on for the magnum versions or come out with a more robust rear stock section.

For anyone that has the new magnum version, any chance you can post some close up pictures of the newer style folding mechanism?

I've got an original model .308 and the folding hinge has gotten loose over time, it's got enough play in it now that it's quite noticeable and I will likley switch out the mechanism at some point in the future if MD Charlton can source the part and the new and improved system will work on my stock.

I sent MD Charlton some video clips last year at their request showing them the amount of play and was subsequently told that they considered it an acceptable amount of slop.... :( It was easy enough to see the amount of play in the video but to be fair to them it feels a lot worse in use then looking at the video.

I had that issue with my 6.5 CM Sig Cross. Annoying when shooting from a bench as you could definitely get some flex in it. My .308 has been rock solid, but that said I rarely fold it. The mechanism is definitely different and much easier to use on the Cross Magnum. Not sure if it's backwards compatible with the 6.5CM/.308. I'll take a peek in a minute.

Looking at it closely, the hinge itself appears to be interchangeable. For that matter, the entire butt stock is the same on both.
Thanks Man I appreciate the info!

It was hard to tell from the pictures I've seen online and when I contacted MD about it last year they had not seen the new folding mechanism in person yet and were not sure if it would be up gradable on to an older stock.

The original was a hard stock to unlock at times even when you knew how to do it.

I will get in touch with them soon and inquire about availability and price.
