I would imagine the cost of a new barrel and install could buy you a new numbers matching SKS.............
Prove it
if somene was inclined to do a little playing with a lathe any decent 308 or 303 barrel would work and be a huge improvement over the stock barrel .
.
Prove it
why would he have too , it isn't friggen rocket science
Tell that to Ruger. Mini 30's have .308" barrels
Nonsense. 2,400 rds later of milsurp and still hasn't blown up yet to date.Except for the fact that the 7.62x39 bullet is .310 diameter and is too over-sized to shoot in a .308
A fruitless venture. I have been looking into installing a custom 21-3/8" barrel on a SKS or CZ858. Turns out it will cost one 858, or two SKSes for just the barrel blank. Next step is to try and import a RPK barrel from the States ($250)... If I can even get an RPK barrel.
The reasoning for the 21-3/8" barrel length is inspired by the Yugo/Iraqi Tabuk DMR. Which turns out to have the "sweet spot" barrel length for the 7.62x39 round. The subjective effective range is extended by just under 200 yards. With proper loading you can push 800 yards with "reasonable" accuracy. But that is of you can extensively replicate the barrel.
Except for the fact that the 7.62x39 bullet is .310 diameter and is too over-sized to shoot in a .308
i was waiting for someone to mention this ....... it is all in the reamer .... if the throat is cut for the larger bullets , it is all good ...
the mini 30 uses 308 barrels with a throat cut for 310 /311 bullets
I brought it up for the benefit of the non-reloaders and shooters who are not familiar with the tolerances between North American .30 cal and Eastern European .30 cal. Not a huge issue for those that can slug a bore and make good measurements, but I wouldn't suggest to anyone that these two calibers have completely interchangeable bullets.
Any sources for new SKS barrels?
