New SKS, first shoot

Congratulations!
I'd highly recommend practicing from different shooting positions at 100m (i.e. sitting on the ground, kneeling and standing, both unsupported and perhaps with shooting sticks). The SKS lets you inexpensively practice field positions that would be rather pricey, even with a basic 30.30 lever action carbine. Sometimes you could do that with a .22, but even a modestly brisk wind will throw shots at that distance.
Ive tried practicing with the SKS at 200m (usually sitting and supported off the table/bench) and find that rather challenging. I only get about 2-4 out of five shots on target at that range so I wouldn't consider myself competant to shoot game at that distance with it, but I think it's good to push the range a bit when practicing with the SKS if only to encourage the shooter to take time with their shots. I'd like to try more prone shooting at that range (supported from a backpack or unsupported) but cannot comment yet on how effective it would be.
So long as you properly clean your rifle after firing corrosive, I'm sure that you'll get lots of fun out of her for years to come!

Was just out shooting mine yesterday also. Put about 80 rounds through it (also had .22 and 12 ga out, or I would have probably shot it more). Only my second time out with the SKS, but it is definitely fun to shoot! At about 80 yards, with surplus ammo, my best was about a 10 inch grouping while standing. Shooting prone (no supports, just lying on ground), I was able to get down to about a 6 inch group at that distance. Obviously I need more practice! I should try sitting position too, next time. I like this gun so much, I'm going to order another one, so that I can keep one original, and then add optics to the second.
I was out as well. I bought a case of 7.62x39 from SFRC and am loving it. Nice and cheap, but corrosive.
The corrosive ammo is not a big deal as long as u clean your rifle after every use. I have read that pouring boiling water over and through the barrel is a good way to go. i have tried it and it seems to work well.
