Hi all , i jus ordered my first SKS from Marstar today. It is an unfired Chinese modle.I would like some info on how well they shoot and what type of groups to expect at 50m to 100m. Any info on the way to clean them from new would also help. I am not new to firearms but got this one for fun at the range or gopher patch. Let me know
thanks

Somewhat in the same boat, ordered 1 and have no experience with them or other S/A long guns. I think the expectation, from my reading, is 3"-4" @ 100m. Haven't looked around for a disassembly/tweaking guide yet but I'm sure I'll find it as there's lots of info in this forum, start with the educumating!

That said, n00b tips are welcome cou:

I've done a bit searching up on them because I'm looking in to buy one as well. I've heard that the Chinese are just as good as the Russian or Yugo's other than just looks, the Chinese SKS's just aren't that pretty. Reliability wise they're just as good as the others and when it does come to accuracy I don't know much, but I've read the same line a couple of times, it's an SKS, so I'm guessing not super accurate I need somebody who knows to help with that one.

Then you have those who say any firearms that do come from China should buried 100 feet under ground in a tank with sharks with freakin' laser beams, and then cemented over. From them you'll hear the oh they're no good they'll fall apart. You really need a neutral voice on this, I am really neutral about it just not that experienced...

As for cleaning you are most likely going to find corrosive ammo if you're going surplus, so you'll have to clean after it every time you fire it. I've heard of a couple techniques to do this, some say pour boiling water down the barrel from the chamber, and then clean up the gas tube. Some say do a wipe down with a patch and then some Hoppes 9

Hope that helped

Clean it, shoot it, Clean it, shoot it

Use the Surplus ammo, have fun

Don't expect sniper accuracy, expect fun plinking, at cans, water jugs, milk jugs, paper targets etc.....whatever your range allows

Cleaning it, use boiling water, use Windex, use Hoppes 9, use what ever you want, the water and windex are to neutralize the corrosive properties of the surplus ammo, then the oil will help prevent the rust

what ever method, just oil it up well after the cleaning

Once again

Clean it, shoot it,,,,,,repeat as necessary............

Enjoy

I don't have the Chinese one, I have the Russian one, and it's a lot of fun....

Welcome to the club !!

I was shooting a 6" x 8" steel plate about 3 out of 5 times fairly consistently at 100 yards using slightly modified iron sights. Remember, this isnt a sniper rifle.. meant as a battle rifle.

With practise and patience, im sure you can shoot fairly well with these guns.

Get a bottle of gunzilla, stuff is amazing for cleaning / lube and protection. Ive put over 1000 rounds through my sks and never once used the boiling water / windex and its showing no sign of corrision or wear.

Surplus isn't exactly the most accurate. It is cheap though.

You can do the following to improve accuracy:

1. use factory loaded ammo, I think SFRC has it for $17/box
2. reload yourself and test how the rifle shoots with different setups
3. take out the gas tube and operate it like a bolt action

ever heard the saying "theres more than one way to skin a cat"? well theres about 1.6 million different ways to clean a rifle, but I find all the boiling water, windex voodoo stuff is unnecessary. clean with cheap solvent, lube with cheap gun oil and its good to go. These things will run without lube, but obviously wear faster. The chinese military rifles are the good ones, not the modern commercial chinese. Mine wasnt far behind russian in terms of quality, accuracy was great. The whole rifle was very tight, the stock was a bit lower quality but not junk. after trying different ways to clean the gas system and having it rust out every day, I got fed up and put a thin film of ballistol klever oil on the piston and in the tube. Bye Bye rust, and it burns out of the gas system and leaves no residue to bake on. The chinese rifles also have a good chrome lined bore that stands up to corrosive ammo very well. As for cleaning the cosmoline off, WD-40 works good and is easy on the wood and metal finish. Gun scrubber, brakleen and other highly volatile solvents were a bit harsh on the bluing, and it had to be oiled to get its shine back (I thought the gun scrubber took the bluing off) search youtube for full detail strip instructions, theyre pretty simple once you get into them. I would recommend a full detail strip to get all the cosmo off with rags and WD-40, use a mild solvent or small amounts of brakleen for the metal, oil the wear surfaces and away you go. That way you alreay have experience stripping the rifle for when youre done shooting. Have fun!

Cleaning with boiling water and Windex may prevent rust but it doesn't clean. It's like the high pressure spray guns in the car wash, even with hot water, they won't scrub off the dirt.

the chinese SKS came in wide range in quality, the early chinese SKS are almost as good as the russian BUT the commercial models are generally pretty crappy.

you need to look at it to know what you got or post some close up pics and then we can help you .

the marstar SKS are not commercial models , they are new military ones.
